A new English education channel will be launched on April 6 as part of efforts to improve English standards and cut down on private tuition costs, the Education Ministry announced yesterday.
The channel, called EBS English and run by the state-owned Korea Educational Broadcasting System, will provide a variety of programs for all ages though satellite-based TV and the internet. It will also be available on a cable channel by June next year, according to ministry officials.
There will be 43 domestic and foreign programs for 18 hours a day from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m., said Yoon Mun-sang, director general of EBS English.
The programs will graded into seven levels of difficulty to allow viewers greater choice, Yoon said. Level 7 programs will be suitable for viewers fluent in English, he added.
A wide array of programs will be offered, from mathematics, history and science to cooking, music shows and cartoons, Yoon said.
"It takes 5,000 to 6,000 hours for children to naturally converse in English but students only study English for a total of 730 hours at school," said Yoon, adding that the channel will fill the gap.
A program aimed at teachers called "Teachers' Guide" will be aired to train teachers in English and a program named "Mom's Time" will offer guidelines to mothers on how to teach English to their children, he said.
About 300 students, parents and teachers at local schools were surveyed to determine the program lineup. EBS officials also analyzed other English broadcast stations and programs, Yoon said.

They say in the text that it takes a child 5000 - 6000 hours to naturally converse in English.
Does this go for any forieng language? Seems overly high to me.
I mean if I studied a language for 10 hrs a week for one year that owuld be aprox 500 hrs. Thus it would take ten years to converse naturally.
I heard elsewhere that it takes about 4 yrs to become fluent ina language.
Perhaps they just mean Koreans learning English, then I think it was possibly an underestimate.
Anyone have any hard info? |

It isn't meant to be like Arirang...
it is for Koreans to learn english....
It will just be a third EBS(Educational Broadcast service) channel but this one will be entirely devoted to English study.... |

At least as it is carried out at DECENT educational establishment NOT dodgy hakwans and the like... |

NO FREAKING WAY!!!??? You mean there's actually going to be a way for the thousands of unqualified, unexperienced teachers to get some TRAINING??? Wow, what a brilliant idea.
Seriously tho, this could be the best thing English related Korea has ever done. Train the teachers. |

| Didn't the government try to do this already a couple years ago? They wanted to provide some kind of low cost tv/internet based alternative to prep school hagwons for the high school kids and it was instantly regarded as fully putrid? |
