I just downloaded my first HDTV compressed movie. It is a japanese movie (no, not a dirty one, unfortunately) with English subs. The gf speaks Japanese, and I scan watch the subs, so we're going to see it this weekend.

I run my dvd player to my TV via VGA, and it looks awesome. Full-length movie that takes up just 700MB. That fits on a CD, folks! It's in some form of .avi format, and sized to about 1/4 of the original resolution, but it blows up and looks really great on the TV. No crappy blocking whatsoever, and even the blacks are pretty good (not as good as the original, but they are decent). Excellent quality for the size -- looks better than a regular DVD, and it fills up the entire 16x9 screen.

I'm impressed. Now I know what the movie companies are scared about.

The quality is so good, it leaves me wondering why HD movies are so darned big if they look good this small. I think they made them that way on purpose, so they'd be more difficult to copy/send as huge files.

How could it be HD if a full movie is only 700mb?

I've downloaded a few documentaries in HD and they were very big files. Roughly 1.4GB per hour of video.

Is there a new way to compress video?

My Kill Bill HD movie alone is almost 10GB.

A 5:26 minute 1920x1080 HD WMV movie with an 8388kbps video data rate amounts to 360MB.

That isn't a HD movie if the resolution isn't at least 720p. Its obviously been compressed with DivX or Xvid which don't do HD stuff well. You can get HD rips in .mkv format but they are about 6-10 gb depending on whether they are 720p, 1080i or 1080p. HDTV rips are not the same as HD rips, DVD rips are usually better than HDTV rips IMO/.

So what is the codec? "HDCompressed"??? You need to post more details if your going to make such a huge claim. It seems outrageous...

though there is RatDVD...remember that?....1.4 for a regular DVD. That was GREAT compression. The compression you're talking about is beyond phenomenal! More details!

I will check into the codec later tonight or tomorrow. It is an .avi, but won't play in Windows Media Player. I needed VLC.

The resolution of the file isn't that huge, but it's big enough to look great when sized to 16x9 on my 42" TV. What impresses me, also, is that it fills up the entire screen (no black bars). I like that.

I have a number of IMAX videos in that format. They are huge, both in file size and in their resolution. They look amazing.

Ah... ok... some things make sense now.

It's XVID 704x396, and it's 46 mins long. Someone misprinted the title of it as a full movie, but it's only half. Now that makes sense. My mistake! It looks like a TV show, possibly?

Still looks pretty darned great for the compression. Video is at 255kbps, Audio at 192kbps, 29fps
