A doctor told my pregnant wife that in times when she really can't resist, it is okay to smoke 1 ciagrette. Just not everyday.
The question is, would you use this doctor again? |

Hell no!
What kinda stupid doctor is that? Next thing he'll tell your wife is that it's ok to smoke crack if she can't resist. |

I basically told her if she goes to that doctor again, she's gotta pay the bill herself. My way of saying 'we're not going to that doctor again'.

Just visited my wife in the maturnity ward today. I was getting in the elevator and this woman in a wheelchair says "cigarette" to me in English.
I laughed and said I don't smke in Korean. I then get in the elevator and go to the sixth floor. She gets off and asks me if my wife is pregnant...I say yes.
"Me too"....WTF? |

Smoking doesn't kill your wife but it does kill your baby. Nicothinamide may interefere with the developmental process of the fetus.
She better quit smoking if she wants to be a good mother. |

She has quit, but it's hard on her. What I DON'T NEED is a stupid quack doctor who got his dgeree out of a cereal box telling pregnant women that smoking is okay.

On the contrary, smoking will kill your wife and your baby. |

What's wrong with this?
Maybe the stress of freaking out for a smoke is worse than having the odd one.
Geez---how hysterical can we get these days? He's not telling her to rlease sarin gas in a small room----or to spend 18 hours a day in PC bongs
Chill

While that is a contributing factor, I think the real culprit is the tendency for herd-type thinking and compulsive conformism, not to mention the obsession with cleanliness and health in Western societies. |

Yeah right. I went to see a doctor the other day for soar throat and the doctor used the metal tongue depressor to check my throat which appears to have been used before and will be used for lines of people waiting outside. I tried to turn away but it was too late...
I was in horror and felt sicker as I realized what he has just done with that nasty thing. |

But how do you know the next doctor is going to be better? Maybe he'll tell her she can have a cig a day and that'll be fine as long as she gets her kimchi. My point being that as soon as a Westerner hears a Korean doctor say something that strikes them as odd or wrong, they tend to label them all as stupid quacks who got their degrees out of cereal boxes.
Anyway, you're not likely to find a Korean doctor who agrees with all of your views. I suggest you look for a doctor who will compromise on the things that happen during and after the actual birth. Those are more likely to be where major differences of viewpoint between East and West occur. |

I would be more concerned with the over-all quality of care that your wife is getting, and how comfortable she feels with the doctor, than one piece of advice you don't agree with. You assume that he's a "quack who got his degree out of a cereal box" because you disagree with one statement he made. Are you a doctor? Do you have any evidence that one cigarette would harm the baby? Maybe the doctor thought that telling her she could have an occassional cigarette would prevent her from taking it up completely again. I have heard doctors that say an occassional glass of wine is fine for pregnant women, and I wouldn't necessarily assume he's crazy even though it sounds dangerous to me.
No wants likes to think about pregnant women smoking and no one advocates it. But it's been done for decades (and I've seen it several times in the U.S. as well). If your wife smoked 3 cigarettes in 9 months, would it really harm the fetus? I don't know, because I'm not a doctor. I don't know anything about birthing no babies, and neither do you. You're just pissed because he said something you didn't want her to hear.
I would let you wife decide. She's the one who is pregnant. And, he's not forcing her to smoke anything; you two can agree that it's out of the question. But, I guess since you are paying for it, it's apparently your decision. |

Good points. On the other hand, smoking creates addiction, right? You wouldn't tell a recovering alcoholic to go ahead and have a glass of wine. |

Let her go back for a counseling session so she can raise the issue and record the m*f.cker. Then report him! |
