I was wondering if someone working at a public school gig could make say 2.6 or 2.7. I work at a hagwon and sometimes make 2.6, but I work on Saturdays as well. I will have 22 months of Korean experience when I finish this current job and 2 1/2 years of teaching experience in North America.
I want to know what to expect before I search for another job come November/December |

You'll probably pull around 2.1 or so, depending on things.
They often offer after-school programs for a bit more cash, but it's not consistent. The real money (hidden) comes from the privates offered by teachers who want you to teach thier kids after school. |

Whom,at any rate, have never approached me at either public school in 20 months of public school thus far.
The Mainland Chinese teacher did do some part time for 25 for a teachers daughter. Then the teacher stiffed him and paid half. And made him buy his own lunch.
Public school teacher power trip. |

You have a Chinese teacher at your school. The reason that I'm asking is that my wife is Chinese and moving to KOrean in August. She is wanting to teach Chinese. |

Yep.From Xian.He's ethnic Korea-a grandparent emigrated-and speaks Korean.
Perhaps start approaching schools to see if they're interested and will offer visa sponsorship.
I don't know how much he makes,but a teacher told me it's a lot less.1.2-1.3??
He complains that he's solely employed as a human tape recorder and is pretty darn bored. |

I am a level 1 teacher in Gyeonggi province.
I have a base pay of 2.4 million,
I get the additional 100k rural allowance (even though I live in Bundang (Seohyun station - I commute 30 minutes to work each day)
I earn an extra 500k per month doing the after school program (between 2:00 and 4:30).
My total class load is between 26 and 28 classes (40 minutes each) per week.
My GROSS salary (not including benefits) is about 3 million won.
My co-worker is a level 3 (newbie). She pulls in about 2.6 before deductions.
We work M-F, 8:40-4:40.
To answer your question... YES. |

I make about the same as "ttompatz" ...
And now my "overtime" classes are over by 6pm (instead of 8:10)
I think that there's more opportunity for after-school classes at high schools (mine is a tech high...) than elementary (although two of my overtime classes are elementary kids: grades 1 - 3 on Mondays, and 4 - 6 on Tuesdays ...) I also have an adult after-school class on Thursdays...
I wouldn't take a chance on doing privates illegally unless I really had to... |

I don't mind working hard. I've slaved as a public school teacher back in North America in horrid conditions. I don't want horrid conditions, but I do want to make about 2.7 million, so I can have about 2.5 after taxes at least. I don't mind overtime. I just want to pay the student loan people what I owe them. I don't plan on filing for bankruptcy, just get the loans out of my hair. Would I be able to get a public school job say in Feb. My contract ends in January. I know it takes about a month to process paper work and all.
Thanks for your help... I plan on coming back to Korea... after this job is finished. |

My extra classes are scheduled for between 8:10 and 8:55 which is great. Try and see if I can get some more out of them in the afternoons as well. Might as well teach 6 - 7 hours a day if I'm going to be here. |

I was making 2.6 a month (2.2 base and 0.4 extra for 4 extra hours a week, 25000 an hour). I could have made a bit more had I wanted to. If I had stayed, I would have gotten a 0.2 monthly increase too for the next contract. |

With a Masters degree, teaching certificate and experience you can make base 2.6-2.7 working 22 hours a week (depending on location). Add in overtime, and you can go higher. Most teachers won't have these qualifications and may make a base of 2.0-2.3. |

I'm a level 2. Thats 2.1 per month. My after school program this semester calls for 100 classes. That's 4 days a week during 7th period. I only am there for three of them, cause I am at my other school, but I leave a worksheet for them to do. After 20 classes, I will get OT. 30K per class, 120 per week. So, my gross will be 2.6, net about 2.4. Starting in June, I will do friday night, saturday and sunday camps. Blocks are minimum 6 hours. I will do 1,2, or 3 blocks per weekend until the end of school. Last semester I did about 18 blocks. Each block is about 250K (50k/hr). (I got a special cause I ahd some grief regarding going to see my family and they bumped it from 180K.) So in June July, I will pick up an extra 3 and a quarter mill. or so. Then there's the provincial camp. 1 million twice a year. Amortized over the year, it works out to about net 2.8.
pre-emptive edit.....ya know...someone jacked me for improper use of 'amortized' before....just can't get it out of my head....

I do not have a master's degree, just a few graduate courses in business. I do, however, have a teaching certificate in social studies and 2 1/2 years teaching experience in North America, and I will have 22 months of hagwon experience by the end of January 2008. I am going to back home for maybe 2-3 weeks (just in time to see the family and renew my driver's license) and take care of some affairs. |
