Seriously...

I saw part of my first James Dean movie was just wasn't that impressed. From what I saw, he wasn't necessarily a great actor like some of the greats and I don't know if he would be one of those great hunks that transcends time....But maybe that's what he's famous for and I just don't see it??

Can someone explain this to me?

he was the stereotype of a 'bad boy' at a time without many

in an era of growing rebellion (and crystalizing definition of 'teenager' as a social category)

Because he died, mainly. But also because he was one of the first actors to use the new "method-acting' style. Him and Brando. Maybe others.

Nope...If I did I would have said "Ah! That guy wasa terrible actor blah blah blah"

I'm just asking what's the big deal with him. I only saw part of the movie and I'm not sure if I'll be able to see it anytime soon, so I figured I'd ask someone else who had at least seen one of his moies to let me know what the fuss was about.

Thanks for the answers...I hope to perhaps see a repeat of that movie since this is Korea and movies get repeated 20 billion times here...But knowing my luck I'll miss out....

Crystallizing the term teenager, dying young and using a new acting technique seem like good answer to me.

Anyone have a favorite James Dean movie to suggest to me?

Edit: I finally had time to google and figure out what movie I was watching...It was "Rebel without a Cause" I guess I have to see more than 30 minutes of it to really get it, huh? Embarassed

it wasn't just the looks. although he was hot, perfectly imperfect..
he was vulnerable. everything about him. the way he moved, spoke, his facial expressions. he was so exquisitely vulnerable and self-destructive it poked at the sad parts of everyone's hearts. broken and raw nerves and pain beyond healing, the human condition that most of us hide to self-preserve.

It's the mystery about him. No one knows what he would have done had he lived to be older. And it was his confidence. He walked the walk.

It's cuz he was bi. James Dean appealed to both men and women with his delicate, androgynous looks and "brooding" sexuality. Peeps get off on that twisted stuff.

Hehehe...

I just don't get it. I watched that movie for about 30 minutes and it had so many moments where I just laughed and said out loud (and I'm alone in my apartment) "HUH??"

I guess the context of the movie made it funny to me. Just a bunch of guys in tight pants tossing switchblades around....It was wow..."It's like home without the guns!" Laughing

So JongnoGuru...Do you find him to be oh so appealing?

Me...ehh....so-so...

You need to remember that that was before method acting became big.

Thanks...

This is why I asked because I looked on hmm imdb or whatever it's called and it's supposed to be this great movie and I'm just laughing. I didn't know if my notoriously bad sense of humor (I laugh during horror movies, dramas, romance movies....just pretty much any movie) was taking control or what....
