I know for sure the YWCA in Suwon offers Korean classes, and the fees are very reasonable. I think it's once a week and you pay by the month. They also offer occasional special classes and programs for foreigners, including field trips, culture classes, and cooking classes.

I don't know about the YMCA.

Edit: GAAD what is wrong with me. SUJI. What I said applies to Suji YWCA, not Suwon.

The YMCA in Suwon has courses. They meet from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM on Saturdays. Go early on your first visit, because they'll have you fill out some paperwork and ask you a few questions to figure out which class is right for you.

Hey D,
Can you just show up? I had a contact person that I tried e-mailing but they never responded at all.

Very Happy Thanks for the info! But anyway, how can we get to the YMCA from Suwon?? Do you know the fee charge?

That's funny, I was interested in the lessons here in Cheong-ju. It's from 10:00 to 12:00. My friend warned me that people usually go a few times and then quit. I went three times, and haven't bothered to go back. Call me lazy.

It's too bad, I met some really cool people there; I should have gotten some email addresses. I didn't like the fact that the teacher didn't speak English. Now I know how my students feel. I also got sick of the last half hour. A music teacher comes in, and we sing a traditional Korean song. I should force the "Star Spangled Banner" on my students.

I only went once, so I don't know that much about it. I didn't want to commit all my Saturdays, so I decided not to enroll in the course. No idea how to get there. I took a cab with friends and didn't pay attention. The fee is reasonable--something like W70,000 for a couple months, and the textbooks are about W25,000. I think you can just show up, but they will have you fill out paperwork and check your level, so go a little early, unless you want to miss the first 15 minutes of the class. The classes have been in session for a few weeks now, so they're already a bit into the textbooks. Sorry that I really don't know anything else about it. I have no idea how to contact them. I'll ask my friends and try to get back to you about it.

This sounds like a place I can go--when I'm short on my dough, and I'm sure I will find many ways to have a good time.

Directions to the Y.M.C.A in Suji?

Heydelores, you're talking about the classes in Suwon, corret? Somebody mentioned Suji, where is that? Did I miss something here. Anyway, your information has been most appreciated, if you're able to find out from your friends about how to get there that'd rock!! Cool

My wife and I are taking korean language classes for foreigners at the YMCA in Suwon. There are two YMCAs in Suwon - the one I go to is in Yeongtong (sp?).

Unfortunately, I'm not from Suwon so I'm not able to give very helpful directions. We come from Yangji, everyone's favorite hamlet, which is on the other side of Yongin. We know our bus route, but I doubt that'd be helpful.

The YMCA is about a fifteen minute taxi/ bus ride from Suwon Station. I believe the bus is the #7, and I think the YMCA would be North of Suwon Station. But if you hop in a cab, they should know where the Yeongtong YMCA is. Sorry I can't be more helpful than that.

I think you can just show up and fill out the paperwork. I'm not quite sure, because our school signed us up. By this week it might be too late to get into the classes. It's a bit of a pain to take the first lesson over week after week to get everyone up to speed. However, I would not begrudge you the opportunity. It is 70000 per person, and the text books are 21000. The classes go until June 30th.

The classes aren't bad. I think they'll be helpful in the long run.
