| @crazy...true, its just the XVID codec, but twice the file-size and double resolution up to 720p that's a nice. It's quality stuff. I'd like to compare the Xvid to the real thing (in 720p). I guess 1080p would be double+ the size again...so about 2.0Gigs per hour...or a FullHD movie on a regular DVD-R. That's very nice. |

I'll agree that it is nice. It used to be that to download a high resolution tv show would be several hundred megabytes. Now, I'm seeing xvid tv shows that are the same resolution but at least half...maybe even a third of the size they used to be. |

Yeah, I've seen Full HD trailers and such. I'll be getting a PS3 sometime soon.
I'm just thrilled the file size can be this small, and still look great on my big screen. My notebook DVD player upconverts it so well via VGA. I don't even need to buy a DVD Player. It tried that route already, and got a 1080i upconvert player by mistake... it didn't look good on my 1080p, so I returned it. A 1080p upconverting player is still over 350,000 here in Korea. I'll just stick with computer over VGA for now. No point in having a 1080i player that my TV still has to upconvert to 1080p (poorly, I might add). The VGA looks stunning anyway... can't imagine a whole lot of difference I can't live with.
Am excited about the PS3. I want to play some games at 1080p. |

given up on the xbox gsx? Looked like you were interested because of your postings here and in the buy and sell. I still have hopes for the xbox. 300 bucks ain't that bad. Cheaper than an upgrade.
I'm upgrading my computer to core2/top end Motherboad, with ATI 1950pro GPU and 2 gigs DDR2 RAM. It still costs MUCH less than a PS3 and more powerful, cheaper games, and multi-player...geesh those Sony guys!
well... no blu-ray...but hey, no media, so what's the point. |

I see some better games in store for the PS3. I've played with the Xbox360, don't care for the controller or much for the games i've played, and want to look harder at the PS3. I also want to be able to play blu-ray. I'd have looked harder at the Xbox360 if it included HDDVD, but adding the drive to it makes it cost more than a PS3 20gb anyway. Yeah, PS3 doesn't have many games yet, but the nextgen games are coming soon, and will look great when the can tap into more power.
Also I've got a student with a PS3 and we're talking about trading games. Could do that with Xboxes too, obviously.
Long-term, I'd love to buy Amazon movies and ship 'em here. Also would like to set up some kind of trading club to share games and movies.
But no... Xbox360 isn't out of the question.
(BTW, I'd like to play with installing Linux on the PS3, which Sony is actually encouraging).
Oh, and I can get a 20gbbPS3 for 400,000 won when my gf goes to Japan. I can play bluray and play games with that. Not bad, really. I don't need the wifi version, and can upgrade the HD easily myself.
That's pretty darned cheap! (they're 479,000 in Youngsan, according to Enuri). |

good luck with that. I think you are talking REALLY long term with the Blu-ray stuff. I don't know if you have been here long enough, but DVD's took forever to come to Korea...and they're STILL not 100% Most places in Busan, anyway, have more Videocassettes than DVDs, LOL.
But cool. I thought the PS3's were 600 bucks...maybe they're a bit cheaper now. At least its getting more reasonable. |

They're 600 for the 60gb model. They're actually more expensive in the USA! I have been following the www.bluray.com forum a bit.
Interesting side note: Many stores, including BestBuy, are no longer selling the 20gb model, because they (rumored) can't make much money off of them.
Honestly, I see a big fight brewing over paid video downloading services and hard media. I wonder if the movies will allow compressed HD movies to be pay-per-view over the net or not. As good as that XVID looks on my big screen, I wonder.
I'm not a fan of owning a lot of discs, but it appears that owning a few and trading around might be the best option for a while. |

Speaking of movies over the internet, I just read an interesting article in the Edit: The Chosun Ilbo.
Internet TV Service Angers Video Rental Shop Owners

They're getting the movies out on HanaTV before they even leave the theater LOL!

Wow... I wonder what the quality is like? |

On my screen, 720p looks very good where as XVID by comparison looks less sharp.

See my example, a 1080p movie would not fit on one DVD-R.
Imagine xvid as a 640x480 image and compare it to 720x560 and 1920x1650 all at the same physical size. |
