I would like to know what percentage of long-times or lifers here on the board are male/female.

There seems to be many more male long-termers/lifers than women and I wonder why that is the case. Any ideas?

There's many more male teachers here so no suprise. Male teachers in general seem to have less of a problem with just up and leaving their home country. For women there are other considerations. For example, going to an overtly chauvinistic country may not pose much of a problem for men, for some women it may give them pause.

So far... there are 4 females here over 8 years... but only 3 guys.. I thought it might have been different.

Why are the reasons why women choose not to renew?

-Chavanistic Culture/lack of respect in the work place

-inherently feminine traits (you know, they are more sensitive to lack of order, nice apartments etc)

-Comparatively speaking, less opporties for marriage/dating

- greater need to reconnect with family in home country?

-Other???????????????????????????????

I personally have met only one longtime western female teacher here is Korea. I know quite a few western males who have been here for over 5 years and I am finishing my second. Of the ones I have talked to that left the main problem was in the relationship department. Korean guys just wanted to fool around and western guys had too many slim hotties to choose from.

This board is not a good representation, because there are a lot more guys who read it. In my office, there are currently 4 Westerners who have been here at least five years, 3 of whom are women.

I think it's much more likely that you just don't travel in the same circles as long-term females (who may be less likely than men to be trolling the pubs and internet bulletin boards).

Traditionally, the womenfolk of this country were confined to the home, rarely travelling beyond the perimiter wall. They would build teeter-totters in the garden so they could catch a brief glimpse of the world outside. I ask you all to join me now in prayer for a return to those simpler, happier, teeter-totter days of yesteryear.

...according to revisionistic mythic accounts of the Joseon Dynasty period as other than the Chinese imperialistic influence of Confucianism that it was.

Traditionally women had a central role in the public affairs of Koreans, leftover effects include the shamanistic mudang women, the Jeju fisherwomen and the habit of wives to control family incomes.

One reason might be that are more foreign guys who get married to Koreans than foreign gals who do. So it seems, anyway.

The guys who marry Korean women tend to stay for a few years and then pack it up and bring her back to the home country, but the few women who do get married to K-men, tend to stay put. Off the top of my head I know at least 4 women who were there over 8 years

I personally know 6 guys who've been here longer than 20 years and about another 10 that have been here longer than 10. I only know 2 women to last more than five years.

You do know that most people in general don't check this site. Right? "Long timers" esp. don't waste their time.
