Does remaining a virgin mean that you are not yet "a man"? Does losing your virginity make you "a man"?

In "Blood On Blood" Bon Jovi wrote:

We each threw in a ten
She took us to this cheap motel
And turned us into men

The crux of the whole movie The 40-Year-Old Virgin was that, despite being forty years old, independant, well-educated, gainfully employed, and having interesting hobbies ( Wink ), the protagonist was, in some way, "incomplete" because he was still a virgin.

Having sex doesn't make you a "man". IMO, when you have a child as a result of that sex and then accept responsibility for raising that child, then you are a man.

No, putting yer wee wee in her ya hoo doesn't make you a man.

But it comes down to semantics at this point.

I'd say it's at least 50% of it.

It certainly wasn't only that move (40 year old virgin) where the entire focus was on getting laid. "American Pie" was another, and the one about the guy who gives up sex for 40 days (not having sex but still obsessed with it). Oh well, people think about so much, I suppose these movies are not completely unrealistic.

Being a virgin or not doesn't make you a man.

I think being a "man" incorporates a lot of different things. Some of those are:

1. Keeping your word.
2. Admitting when you are wrong.
3. Having courage to stick by your convictions.
4. Loyalty

Those are the 4 that just came to mind. I'm sure there are more. Basically, I think a real "man" is someone that you want by your side with the shi*t hits the fan.

You sound like the kind of man I'd respect as a friend. Good to hear that there are people like you who exist on these forums. Most people here are twats.

Taking someone's virginity though... that makes you a man!

I think that qualifies you as a responsible adult more than manhood. If a female possesses these qualities, is she a man?

What takes a man? A male anatomy. That's all. Everything else is a social construct. Buy into it if you want, but you're more the fool for doing so.

The key:

Be who you are.

This is part of a larger issue. Our society is devoid of any kind of manhood ceremony. Many cultures have some kind of ceremony that tells a male "you are now a man, you're now responsible for your own actions".
