Two questions: 1) What band do you think created music substantially "ahead of its time?"

2) What band seems to transcend time and generations?

Let's keep it late 60s to current.

Without giving it much thought I think the Clash produced music substantially ahead of its time and I think Led Zep transcends time in an amazing way.

I'd give a nod to Pink Floyd.

one band fits both bills: the Beatles.

id have to say they were not only ahead of their time, but they changed the times. Rock music is divided into pre and post beatles. the white album certainly forshawdowed psychedelic rock. as for transcending time and generations, their music is still relevant. Songs like Let it Be, Revolution, Hey Jude etc, etc are still relvant to the masses and strike a deep chord. Just say thank you oasis.

this moment in rock history...

The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Black Sabbath, etc. They were hard and bluesy and don't sound like someting that would be from those times. Hendrix, too.

The earliest Stones doesn't transcend time, but it took them until the late 60's. They and the Beatles, early on, were kind of poppy. Escpecially The Beatles.

Listen to a song like "Sympathy for the Devil" and you think, "Gee, that would be a hit if it came out today."

This is about the billionth thread on music. Threads about other genres of art can be counted on the fingers of both hands.

Music, truly the basest artform.

For an irish band they've come a long way and I don't know anyone else who plays guitar like the Edge. Its like its his signature sound. Coupled that with irish inspiration I think a lot of their songs cannot be matched for their introspective lyrics and soothing rock themes. Have a listen to their early stuff I think you'll be impressed.
