Even CNN International's Inside Africa correspondents must be shaking their heads over the news from the conference with that illustrious leader Robert Mugabe.

Turns out South Africa's Mbeki has nothing to say, and indeed all the so-called defenders of the rights of the people are silent about what amounts to a national collapse.

Consider this: Zimbabwe has the world' highest inflation rate, currently running at 1700% annually.

Unemployment is estimated to be around 80%.

Violence is on the rise, mostly because of police beatings and false imprisonment.

The whites, whose land has been confiscated, have fled while millions of displaced blacks are now creating a refugee crisis. The WHO estimates it is only a matter of months before dysentry and typhus spread through these makeshift camps.

The clampdown on foreign journalists and dissenters in the ranks continues.

Civil war is a real possibility--on a scale that would surpass that in Sierra Leone.

Not a peep from those in a position to do something.

Meanwhile the regional black leadership smiles and winks, and pays deference to Mugabe the megalomaniac, not even bothering to tell him that it might serve his country's best interests for him to retire next year when his current term expires.

So the next time you hear some leftists propping up this most recent socialist paradise and ranting on about how the West has neglected Africa, how AIDS and HIV there could be staved off with cheap drugs (but apparently no call for refraining from sexual promiscuity), just remind them how corrupt these governments are (according to the UN, seven of the top ten most corrupt are in Africa), how they pilfer food aid from their people to live exhorbitant lifestyles and how they brutalize their own black brothers.

STEVE!!!

DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY TIMES THE MANCHESTER GUARDIAN – CONSIDERED BY MANY TO BE A 'LEFT WING' NEWSPAPER – HAS DONE ARTICLES ROBERT MUGABE AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN ZIMBABWE??? DID YOU NOT KNOW THAT IF YOU DO A SEARCH FOR ARTICLES COVERING “MUGABE “ ON THE WALL STREET JOURNAL WEBSITE – A RIGHT-WING NEWSPAPER – AND A SIMILAR SEARCH ON THE MANCHESTER GUARDIAN WEBSITE, YOU GET 303 ARTICLES BY THE JOURNAL AS OPPOSED TO 2796 ARTICLES BY THE GUARDIAN!!! CHECK IT YOURSELF!!!

IN ADDITION, FAR MORE 'LEFT WING' HUMAN RIGHTS GROUPS HAVE CALLED ATTENTION TO CONDITIONS IN ZIMBABWE THAN HAVE GROUPS LIKE THE HUDSON INSTITUTE!!! IN FACT, REPORTERS WITHOUT BORDERS SAID – AND I QUOTE:

“The octogenarian leader, in power for more than 25 years, works to silence all opposition voices through a tame so-called press court and his intelligence service. In 2003, after getting rid of the foreign media, he targeted the independent paper The Daily News. Despite several court orders allowing the paper to reopen, the government has stood firm and done everything it can to prevent the paper reappearing. The government’s repressive machinery to spy on and punish independent media outlets grows each year.”

HERE'S WHAT THE UNITED STATES INSTITUTE OF PEACE HAD TO SAY ABOUT MUGABE:

The Mugabe government and ZANU-PF use torture as a systematic means of clinging to power by destroying people physically and mentally and by wreaking terror on those who might threaten Mugabe's rule.

There had been an "absolute onslaught" of torture after a failed constitutional referendum that ZANU-PF sponsored in February 2000 in the hope of cementing Mugabe's grip on power, and to break the back of the democratic movement. torture had been entirely political in motivation and entirely associated with elections. During the months preceding the March 2002 presidential elections, Amani Trust documented a rise in torture cases to about 20 per day. Oddly, Amani officials found that reports did not decline after the election but, rather, increased to roughly 50 per day by the end of March. Some 90 percent of victims have been members of MDC. The remainder have been members of the legislature, teachers, trade unionists, and commercial farm workers.

The only way for a Zimbabwean to assure that he will not be tortured is to be able to identify himself as a member of ZANU-PF. "I think it's no joke to say that in Zimbabwe, by our figures, probably 20 percent of the entire population has had intimate experience with torture."

Torture methods popular with ZANU-PF and others include beating the soles of victims' feet and subjecting various body parts to electric shock. Amani Trust has also seen many victims with ruptured eardrums, produced by percussive slapping of their ears. Reeler said this was not an incidental result of victims being hit on the head, but rather a deliberate and practiced slapping of the ears with the purpose of inflicting pain and long-term hearing damage.

Reeler said beating the soles of victims' feet was a newly popular torture method. He called this a "hard indicator" of torture in that it is impossible to beat a person that way without removing his shoes and restraining him.

Rape cases, which Reeler said could only be described as "political rape," are prevalent. The victims are typically women who belong to MDC, are married to MDC members, or are so suspected. Their attackers tell them that is why they are being raped. The prevalence of this is hard to document, however, because rape victims seldom come forward and report the assaults.

Strange as it may sound, i doubt it because

a) The people would rather seek refuge in other or neighbouring countries. The borders are porous, and already vast numbers have moved into South Africa, Mozambique, and Botswana. Not to mention the huge exodus to the UK earlier on in the crisis.

b) Warfare would be suicide. The populace has no arms. All weapons were confisated in successive crackdowns over the years by Mugabe under the reason of curbing crime. Thus..its easier to get an AK47 on the streets of Geneva than to get hold of one in Harare. The people are powerless, Mugabe and his North-korean trained army hold all the cards. There was a civil war there from 1972-1980, however both sides had backers in those days supplying arms. Not so now- Russia and Cuba are no longer into arming rebel movements, and China just wants to befriend Mugabe to exploit the resources. And the UK and the west who helped Mugabe to power originally, now can't be bothered to remove him.

Interesting that you should mention China. Contemporary Africa resembles China in many ways. For instance, at various times throughout its history, China has been ruled by ruthless warlords, exploited by foreign powers, and its people have been enslaved.

I suppose a lot comes down to the hierarchical culture whereby people can't challenge or question-and to do so is suicide. Korea to me is the perfect example of a society designed to create a Kim Jong Il. In Africa, you had the tribal system whereby everyone identifies with their ethnicity and their identity is subsumed within the group. The group punishes wayward individuals, and the big chief holding power takes all, unchallenged.

What exactly is the point of this sort of post? If those people have defended Mugabe, then you can call them on it. Otherwise, what is accomplished by speculating about what they might say in posts they haven't made?

Let me get this straight...you people get all worked up because he puts his thread titles in all caps? Yet, MoS, in a very lame attempt at proving some sort of point, types entire posts in caps and huge letters (wasting space) and you give it a pass? You fucking lefties are absolutely kooky. So what if the guy puts his title in all caps? His posts are not in all caps so why do you all freak out? Methinks you can't deal with the content so you criticize the capital letters in the title. Get a fucking life.

Free trade would help Africa a lot.

But yes steve, corrupt gov'ts are a big cause for Africa's plight. red-tape allows corruption to run rampant as well.

Poland wasn't a country until Wilson made it one in 1919. Hitler decided to recitfy that and, Poland being weak, took it.

Maybe I just don't like Poland. Never did anything good, so why shouldn't they be a part of greater Germany - Octavius Hite

All that proves is that you don't have a sense of humor.
