Good calls. I'd like to add Sol.illaquists of Sound to the Ahead category. They exemplify the direction that hip hop is headed (ignoring the radio hip hop which hardly evolves). Probably throw Jedi Mind Tricks in there too. Both groups feature complex and captivating beats with unusual vocal stylings and meaningful lyrics. Neither group is radio friendly, but each has a huge following, truly pigeonholing them as ahead of their time.
Check out Sol.illaquists's myspace page here and do not neglect to listen to the four songs featured. wow wow wow especially Ur Turn
Transcending time: anything Sasha & Digweed did together. |

Some great examples on here, but I'm having trouble with the term "ahead of its time." The Clash were certainly ahead of their time, but that's just how they revolutionised the music. They left a significant impact, so I just see it differently.
I've still got the Slackers on my mind so I have to add them. Their musical style is crafted by old reggae, ska, and soul influences, so technically they're behind in the times, but they keep the music alive nicely. |

For an irish band they've come a long way and I don't know anyone else who plays guitar like the Edge. Its like its his signature sound. Coupled that with irish inspiration I think a lot of their songs cannot be matched for their introspective lyrics and soothing rock themes. Have a listen to their early stuff I think you'll be impressed. |
Heard all their stuff, and pretty sure there are several guitarists much better than the Edge.[/quote]
I'm quite sure there are and you probably know a lot more about guitarists than I do. Hell I thought Steve Stevens was the greatest. |

Someone put the Arcade Fire on their list? Crazy. I once recorded a seven-track song of sped-up overtone chanting with the bassist. When I listen to it, it makes me feel like I'm high. I shared a locker with his highschool girlfriend.
I'm going to say Beatles and Led Zep Jimmy Hendrix, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Lead Belly. |

Pink Floyd and David Bowie (especially stuff like 'Heroes' and 'Scary Monsters').
See also some tracks on Syd Barrett's 1970 solo record 'The Madcap Laughs'. Some of it sounds like the grungy, Indie sounds of the 80s and 90s and is 30 years ahead of its time. |

I like Belly
and Veruca salt too
umm I like thr rave remix of La Fortuna ...
Utah Saints and queen classics - but keep in mind just cuz I like some songs does not mean I endorse their free sex witverybody/thing Led Zep fish... and drug use
Some rock icons with healthy lives will see all them hippie types dead ...
Like Stryper yeah he's gonna see all the other glam bands die of liver/heart failure... (not that he wishes them ill - just that Matthew Sweet was/is not some Crack Head pants l00zer...) |
