March 27, 2007 - In what appears to be Microsoft's standard cart-before-the-horse style of information delivery, the leading console manufacturer of this generation confirmed nearly all of the rumors preceding today's announcement of the new black, HDMI-enabled Xbox 360 Elite.
Dubbed the Xbox 360 Elite (not the "Zephyr" as had been rumored), the new black, $479.99 Xbox 360 comes bundled with a 120GB hard drive, has an HDMI port, and will ship to the US and Canada Sunday, April 29, 2007, Microsoft told IGN today in an interview over the phone. |

That sucks if you have one. Now I might consider one, once the modding picture of PS3/new 360 (while maintaining online functionality) becomes clearer to me. |

I don't think that this is "Elite" version offers much for all the extra money. You get 3 things.
1. An upgraded HDD (120G) (worth $50) --> They're going to sell it for $180!!!! seperately...the thieves! If you are networked to your home PC you won't ever need more than 20G.
2. an HDMI port which I don't see the big point of with games. I don't think a digital connection will improve the image quality at all as the games are anti-aliased, fast moving, and not FullHD. Also, M$ suggests using the optical cable for sound even with the HDMI...so what's the point?
3. and a black finish...ok here's my 200 bucks!
My 2 cents |

Well said. But about the HDD, I'm too lazy to look for answers, but won't it be a 2.5" HD? If so, decent quality at 120 GB would be somewhere around $100, no? |

Games are not Full HD?
Then why did Microsoft make a big deal about 1080P capability through VGA then? Apparently, this Xbox has better upscaling ability too, I read somewhere?

@smog...yes you are right the drive is 2.5 (5400rpm). Yes, they go for about $100, my bad...but that's still an $80 markup on retail prices.
@gsx..the xbox plays 720p (maybe 1080i, the xbox site is a little confusing)...no 1080p. The site says that the max resolution for the VGA connector is 720p...but again the site is contradictory. Here's a link:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/xbox360/highdefdetails.htm
EDIT: I really don't think and HDMI interface will increase the gaming resolution or graphics quality already available...but I may be wrong.
but the HDMI might be useful if you get the $100 HD-DVD add-on (increasing the system price ever more), if it even takes off.
EDIT: Here's a video interview about the new 360 with an MS developer:

HDMI was invented for one purpose and thats DRM. HDMI protects the signal where as DVI doesn't.. HDMI blows and it has nothing to do with HD content it has all to do with HDMI.
The elite version what a bunch of BS.. They give you HDMI but its ment for HD content delivery. Sorry to burst any ones buble but the shietxbox360 doesn't have an intergrated HD optical drive its a seperate purchase. So all of the sudden the Ps3 isn't that expensive at all. You get a Blue ray and HDMI and 60 gig hd. |

You guys might be missing the obvious plus from all of this. This might result in a dramatic lowering of prices for the older XBOX360's. |

Smaller processor means less heat, too. Some say the old Xbox360s are a bit noisy. The newer Xbox360s are made with a newer processor that's a smaller format (but same speed, I believe) and runs cooler. This smaller format is cheaper to produce, as well. I guess MS things making something cheaper means they can charge us more.
By the way, HDMI and DVI do look better than VGA at high resolutions. No issues or problems with things like ghosting, etc.. It makes the image look better, but only if your monitor is capable of showing a difference. DVI always worked fine, but I found it a big fragile, and it doesn't transfer audio like HDMI does.
But yeah, a lot of this is about copy protection. The beauty of it is, as I've mentioned in another thread, if compressed/reduced HDTV looks this great via VGA, I don't care if I have HDMI/Full HD, blah, blah.
The prices for the new XBox360s are high, because if people think they're coming out at the same price later, they'll hold off and not buy anything until they can get the new one. That hurts sales now. When they come out with the new ones, I bet MS will reduce the price, or offer bundles through retailers after a while. |

The new xbox360 aren't using the new 65nm cpus. Microsoft refuses to comment on when the new updated CPU's will make it to the xbox.
You failed to see the point of HDMI. HDMI was invented to protect HD-DVD /Blu-Ray content but since the xbox360 isn't standard equiped with a HD-DVD its kinda pointless. Really pointless because standard DVD's don't cary HD content, so what the point.. Its so MS can sucker you into buying an extra HD-DVD drive which added into the package costs more then Ps3.
Will a Xbox360 even play non WMV DRM infested self authored DVD? I highly doubt that. |

Right from the horse's mouth:
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entertainment/xbox-360-elite-interview-with-microsofts-albert-penello-247635.php

Most of our conversation was about denying 65nm process chips and quieter disc drives, but he did confirm that new marketplace announcements would be made later in the week. Is that related to the Netflix speculation we were toying with yesterday?
Gizmodo: Will there be a new processor inside the Xbox 360 Elite, perhaps one using a cooler-running, 65nm process?
Penello: It's interesting. There's been a lot of questions about that, and the answer is, the insides of the boxes change all the time. There's nothing specific going on with Elite regarding anything like that. We make changes to the boxes all the time, just as part of cost reductions and continuous improvement, so no, there's nothing really interesting to talk about there.
Gizmodo: There was talk about how the processor was going to be cooler-running and perhaps quieter.
Penello: No. we haven't announced anything like that.
Gizmodo: So it's pretty much the same innards, except for that HDMI connectivity and a 120GB hard drive?
Penello: Right. It still plays all the same great games that the core system plays and the regular Xbox 360 plays. It's just the black finish, the HDMI and the upgraded hard drive, right. And obviously it also includes the cable, which we feel is importantto make sure that no matter what HD interface you have on your TV, when you take the console out of the box, we provide you with the cable that you need.

I was planning on getting the 360 elite but decided on the 360 premium. I just bought one today and finished modding it to play copied games.
Over the last couple of weeks i've downloaded over 30 xbox 360 games. Although a game takes about 40 minutes to burn at 2x, the end result was a payoff. Today i burnt off a few and they work just like the retail ones.
Took me about 3 hours to mod it, but it was well worth the time and effort. For anyone wondering how i modded it, I just changed the firmware of the dvd drive in the xbox. worked like a charm!!
cheers. |

The 360 is capable of 1080p output. This was included in a software update last Autumn. Only a few games such as Virtua Tennis 3 actually support such a resolution. Most PS3 games don't use 1080p either because of frame rate problems. Wrench is right about HDMI, its very similar in quality to DVI/VGA and Component. Only on very large TVs are you going to see the difference. |

Actually I don't know where he got his info about HDMI but as far as I know there is no difference in video quality between HDMI and DVI. The only difference is in the cable/port used and that HDMI carries audio signals as well.
Gideon, good job! |
