I am looking at the i-station V43, the Cowan A3 and am about to look at the iRivers...I want something that will give me mp3, movie capability, access the internet, the ability to read/write in Word format, and GPS.

I've visited all the websites but the product sites from Korea do not have an English equivalent website (red flag #1), they are all in Korean with a few choice English phrases - usually poor konglish (red flag #2) and there is no mention of them being convertable to English (red flag #3). I just gave my Zaurus to my wife so I need to find something for myself now. Does anyone have experience with this type of PDA/Personal Entertainment sysem, and can they be converted to English at all?

Any help would be appreciated...I might have to go back to Japan to get another Zaurus.

I'm pretty sure it can be done and I'm also pretty sure that rocklee has answered this before. You should ask him about it.

I had the clerk show me that the player could be switched to English menus before I bought it. I was looking to buy a cheap, no-name brand so wasn't really researching beforehand.

The latest i-station model will do all that except I doubt it can write on a Word document. Only read. You would need something running MS Windows to be able to write onto a Word document. I don't think any of the smaller PMP's run Windows. You would need to go a step up and look at those very small, ultra portable PC's like the Samsung Q1.

Even the PMP1000 had multi-language support so I am sure that all of their newer lines would be the same.

From another forum I occasionally read:

Quote:
I have been reading through all the threads about the Cowon Q5 in Korea's largest PMP forum, PMPinside and will inform you about the main points I picked out...

Release Date?

The most important one, I suppose. The Q5 has finally passed MIC, the Korean association of electronic safety, along with all other international safety marks, including CE, as of March 23rd.

History shows that products are released one month after the electronic safety has been passed (Cowon D2: Passed - November 2006 / Released: December 2006, iriver Clix2: Passsed - January 2007 / Released: February 2007 & US release April).

The highest speculated release date therefore is Mid April, or 15th of April, according to PMPinside members. Pre-orders may be taken earlier than this date of course.

However, Cowon is having trouble with manufacturing the product and its original release date was actually January 2007, with the A3 supposed to come out in December 2006, together with the D2, in an attempt to over-ride all Korean rivals.

Cowon is now in trouble because Digital Cube's iStation NetForce S43, its biggest rival and the Number 1 PMP Maker in Korea, is selling like mad all over the country, offering a very similar / superior spec and design to the Q5. The Q5 was originally called P5 and was supposed to wipe out the S43 even before it was released but Cowon failed and already 180,000 S43's have been sold in Korea.

The iStation S43 Spec:

Slimmest PMP in its class - just 19mm thin
Easy Launcher GUI based on Windows CE
Organizer function such as Calendar, Calculator, Notes...etc
Office Document reader
4.3inch 800x480 16 million color display
Home Theater Transformation Feature with S-Video Output
Video Acceleration Engine for butter smooth video playback + virtually all video codec support, ranging from Xvid, Divx, MPEG1,2,4 to MKV, WMV8 and 9.
DIMAGIC Sound Technology which the company claims to be superior than SRS WOW HD (iriver), Digital Natural Sound Engine (Samsung) & BBE Mach3Bass (Cowon).
Dual Speaker & Full Stereo
Mutitasking, Internet Browsing, Virtual keyboard, MaxAccurate Handwritten recognition technology, WLAN 54G, Custom Application Supported & Fully Skinnable GUI.
D-SLR Raw File Viewing possible
Automatic firmware upgrade with iManager
Digital Photo Album Feature for iPhone like Photo browsing
Voice Recording & USB 2.0/HOST Feature
Cradle & Remote control available
Battery life of 6 Hours of non-stop video playback

Digital Cube went ahread to exploit this situation as much as possible and squeeze out Cowon from 2nd place by releaseing another player, the T7 next month, which sports a 7inch display with similar features as the Q5.

Another Rival is the Maxian D900 'NEO' - already out in Korea & available for purchase, the device is the world's first PMP to feature a Davinci Chipset for video playback of all video formats on the world. Codenamed NEO, the device is very similar to the Q5, with a 4.3inch 800x480 display, windows ce, sd/ mmc card expansion, FLASH GUI...etc

Cowon is currently getting sandwiched between the NetForce S43 and the D900 NEO. They are in a situation in which they need to release the device as soon as possible, compensating for very high price (due to manufacturing problems) or release it much later compensating for cheaper price...

Loyal Cowon Users are extremely angry and furious in Korea at the moment, refusing to buy the D2 because it is seen as an 'experimental version of the Q5' and a sad attempt to attack the iriver Clix2.

As time goes on, more and more Cowon users are switching to iStation and other companies' products and Cowon is threatened to lose Number 2 market leadership in Korea if this continues.

That was quite long..

Thanks for reading and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask, I always keep myself updated with PMP news direct from Korea..

I'm a Cowon dude myself, but the S43 sounds pretty hot, and Cowon is dragging its heels releasing the A3 and Q5.

The i-station Netforce Navi really looks like the best PMP out there at the moment. If spec count is anything to go by.

The nice thing about how i-station rush out newer models all the time is that the older models take a price nosedive!! The V43 can be had for under 300,000. When I got mine exactly 1 year ago it was 600,000!! Give it 6 months and this Netforce thing will be 400,000.

The iStation S43 looks good, but it is quite a bit bigger than you would expect it (it is closer to UMPC than PMP).

Plus it runs Windows CE so you can attach a keyboard to it and use it like a normal computer.
