Russian military intelligence services are reporting a flurry of activity by U.S. Armed Forces near Iran's borders, a high-ranking security source said Tuesday.

"The latest military intelligence data point to heightened U.S. military preparations for both an air and ground operation against Iran," the official said, adding that the Pentagon has probably not yet made a final decision as to when an attack will be launched.

He said the Pentagon is looking for a way to deliver a strike against Iran "that would enable the Americans to bring the country to its knees at minimal cost."

He also said the U.S. Naval presence in the Persian Gulf has for the first time in the past four years reached the level that existed shortly before the invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

Col.-Gen. Leonid Ivashov, vice president of the Academy of Geopolitical Sciences, said last week that the Pentagon is planning to deliver a massive air strike on Iran's military infrastructure in the near future.

A new U.S. carrier battle group has been dispatched to the Gulf.

The USS John C. Stennis, with a crew of 3,200 and around 80 fixed-wing aircraft, including F/A-18 Hornet and Superhornet fighter-bombers, eight support ships and four nuclear submarines are heading for the Gulf, where a similar group led by the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower has been deployed since December 2006.

The U.S. is also sending Patriot anti-missile systems to the region.

I know Russia is known for souping things up abit in their media, but this seems alittle off-the-cuff....

Those news sites, especially Pravda, have been transformed into a mix of news, national enquirer and onion.com. I'd have to see it on http://www.itar-tass.com/eng/ to believe it

No, and I didn't see it on cnn.com after searching the site. I think it's just a made up story.

But something tells me this is atad closer to the truth than in some cases -like the story about Elvis getting abducted by Al-Qaeda and having him sing "love me tender" to Osama Bin Laden

This story has a small whiff of proof to it

..........ok, if nothing materializes from it in the next 8 months, I will promise to run around Times Square, buck naked (and you CAN watch the news for that one Wink )

The Stennis is deployed to the Gulf of Oman. The Eisenhower is off the coast of Somalia. Check out GlobalSecurity.org.

It sounds like these Russians are just sitting around a bottle of vodka, trying to see what kind of reactions they can instigate.

I don't buy it. The war in iraq was easily predictable. This smacks of unfound rumor. Any imminent attack will be well-broadcasted, as Iraq was. The American congress doesn't know what the Pentagon is thinking, how do these slobs, I mean Slavs?

Congress funds the Pentagon. Therefore Congress understands very well and indeed approves its White House-directed activities.

And the carrier movements have been openly known for a time now. Nothing was ever "exposed." One does not conceal carrier battle group movements into this or that theater.

America uses its carriers for strategic, power-projecting reasons. Show the flag; demonstrate seriousness of purposes; preposition forces in any given theater.

As for alleged hidden intentions and secret war plans...is someone taking Russian press statements at face value? Do we not know better than that?

Some of the "buildup" is a result of the capture of the British Marines. When the US moves a carrier group anywhere, it's typically a strategic response in order to put some "muscle" behind any negotiations. If there was in-fact a true mobilization of US forces, it wouldn't be something that the Russian Intelligence Services would be broadcasting.

One has to look at the source of the information and analyze the motivation for releasing that information. The Russians aren't and haven't been prone to airing the findings of their intelligence agencies, UNLESS there is some political warfare reason.

It sounds like the Russians are attempting to stir a pot. They have a history of that. It's interesting that the Russians seem so concerned about the government of Iran while the conflict in Chechyna boils over. Could it be that Iran is a beneficiary of Russian economic policy? I would think so. Remember that Russia is also one of the world's major oil producers. Any rumours of an Iran situation will naturally drive up world crude prices.

It's a wilderness of mirrors out there..
