something that always bothered me:
This island is presumably somewhere "near" Fiji...
How the hell did that small drugs plane manage to get all the way out there from Nigeria, is it?
Surely it can't carry that much fuel |
There is a smoke monster thing roaming the island and you pull up for this? |
It has been established by the writers that there are paranormal activity on the island but they haven't explained how such a small plane got so far
Thats what I'm asking |
I see.
Wow. |
it must be an absolute joy to be you |

I thought Walt was the older guy. My oops.
The new Battlestar is fantastic entertainment. Even intelligent, at times. Since the end of the first season, Lost has been neither fantastic nor intelligent. |

Battlestar Galactica faces the same problem Lost does. For most of the third season it's been a soap opera.
I liked this latest episode of Lost. It was a simple plot and it tied up a lot more loose ends than it opened up. |

How is the new Battlestar fantastic? I don't particularly enjoy any shows in which humans continually encounter aliens. It's always the same old thing. They meet a race that breeds without having sex. "Hmm, I wonder if that will ever happen to us? What exactly is it to be human?"
They meet a race that does not require a physical body. "Hmm, I wonder if we will ever be like that? What exactly is it to be human?" They have cyborgs on board who wonder what certain emotions feel like. "Hmm, will we always feel emotions? What exactly is it to be human?"
etc., etc.

don't smoke because ashes are evidence, ... but fingerprints aren't?
"Michael of course"... of course?
The Niki and Paulo plot line oughta be buried once and for all
the expose episode was interesting in the various flashbacks and overlaps without re-running old scenes, instead new perspectives... but overall the episode was lacking |

Have you seriously watched it for more than five minutes? I think you're talking about a different show. |

If I didn't know better I would simply assume you were talking out of your ass. But I know better.
One could reduce a show like Battlestar to the sum of its parts and claim that it's just another "Us vs. Them" bore, but in fact, this show merely uses that stereotypical macro-plot as a means to an end, that is, to reflect upon real issues we face in the very real world of right now (think: Star Trek, but with better actors, a much darker atmosphere, and cooler ships).

In the end, every show out there is simply a glorified soap opera, repackaged and distributed to its particular niche market. On the other hand, does anyone remember the War of the Worlds TV series from way back when? I recall that one being more action oriented and they just dispensed with all the jabberwocky and kicked alien ass. Or, I could just be looking back with rose tinted glasses... |

| Mack, no offence, but why don't you start your own BattlestarGallacticaRules thread instead of poisoning this one? |

Because I don't want to point out how much Battlestar rules, I want to make clear how much Lost sucks. The first season was fun, and then it all went to pot.
End. Of. Story. |

Hmm, this explanation doesn't really pique my interest as I found Star Trek (and its spawn) to be rather pedestrian science fiction. Good science fiction should do what you describe-which is reflect upon real issues we face (especially more timeless issues), but not all science fiction does it very well. A friend of mine in college used to say that science fiction was the easiest genre to write, but the hardest to write well. I think I know what he meant and I tend to agree. I find I don't care for space science fiction too much because the focus is usually on fighting, but with cool technology. Complex ships, light sabers, voice-activated everything, phasers and so on. You say this show does reflect on real issues. Could you be more specific? Could you recommend an episode or two that you think would demonstrate this? |

We've had spirited, intelligent debates in the past, so I assume you are talking from experience (i.e. you've watched at least a few episodes of Battlestar) and not simply pulling something "out of your ass".

Sure. I recommend the entire first season. |

Meh. No way I'm going to watch an entire season just to see if a show is good or not (would anybody do such?) I'll watch the first three episodes and if I'm not impressed, I'll use my time more wisely. |
