I really appreciate all the replies and advice given. It helps just knowing that lots of others are going through the same thing or have gone through it. True Samurai, thanks for that link to Zen Meditation. I will definitely look into it. I went out to a couple shopping districts today in Seoul and bought a few items I had my eye on for awhile. Knowing that the money from all of these kids' parents were going to my brand new cologne, shoes, and electronics kinda helped.

I'm pleased you're interested. Another nice source for basic Buddhism is this: http://reluctant-messenger.com/gospel_buddha/

Here is a pertinent excerpt from my favorite chapter (hope you don't mind)

Chapter 20: The Sermon at Rajagaha

Quote:
...The Buddha, perceiving that the whole assembly
was ready as a vessel to receive the doctrine,
spoke thus to Bimbisara the king: [6]

"He who knows the nature of self
and understands how the senses act,
finds no room for selfishness,
and thus he will attain peace unending.
The world holds the thought of self,
and from this arises false apprehension. [7]

"Some say that the self endures after death, some say it perishes.
Both are wrong and their error is most grievous. [8]

"For if they say the self is perishable,
the fruit they strive for will perish too,
and at some time there will be no hereafter.
Good and evil would be indifferent.
This salvation from selfishness is without merit. [9]

"When some, on the other hand,
say the self will not perish,
then in the midst of all life and death
there is but one identity unborn and undying.
If such is their self,
then it is perfect and cannot be perfected by deeds.
The lasting, imperishable self could never be changed.
The self would be lord and master,
and there would be no use in perfecting the perfect;
moral aims and salvation would be unnecessary. [10]

"But now we see the marks of joy and sorrow.
Where is any constancy?
If there is no permanent self that does our deeds,
then there is no self;
there is no actor behind our actions,
no perceiver behind our perception,
no lord behind our deeds. [11]

"Now attend and listen:
The senses meet the object
and from their contact sensation is born.
Thence results recollection.
Thus, as the sun's power through a burning-glass causes fire to appear,
so through the cognizance born of sense and object,
the mind originates and with it the ego, the thought of self,
whom some Brahman teachers call the lord.
The shoot springs from the seed;
the seed is not the shoot,
both are not one and the same,
but successive phases in a continuous growth.
Such is the birth of animated life. [12]

"Ye that are slaves of the self and toil in its service from morn until night,
ye that live in constant fear of birth, old age, sickness, and death,
receive the good tidings that your cruel master exists not. [13]

Best exercise for you right now is Kumdo (wood and bamboo sword).

When I first got to Korea I was in your shoes. but when you pick up a piece of bamboo and beat the crap out of stuff...your stress goes away pretty fast.

Set realistic goals for each lesson, do your best to prepare effectively, but then step back and remind yourself not to take it all too seriously.

If you wake up and dont want to smile,
If it takes just a little while,
Open your eyes and look at the day,
Youll see things in a different way.

Dont stop, thinking about tomorrow,
Dont stop, itll soon be here,
Itll be, better than before,
Yesterdays gone, yesterdays gone.

Why not think about times to come,
And not about the things that youve done,
If your life was bad to you,
Just think what tomorrow will do.

Dont stop, thinking about tomorrow,
Dont stop, itll soon be here,
Itll be, better than before,
Yesterdays gone, yesterdays gone.

All I want is to see you smile,
If it takes just a little while,
I know you dont believe that its true,
I never meant any harm to you.

Dont stop, thinking about tomorrow,
Dont stop, itll soon be here,
Itll be, better than before,
Yesterdays gone, yesterdays gone.

Dont you look back,
Dont you look back.

I'm at the seven month mark and had what was probably the worst week I've ever had in Korea last week. Last Monday, I was almost positive I was quitting this week, and I wouldn't do anything. I didn't prepare for my classes, I didn't bother trying to teach properly, I was rude to everyone around me and locked myself in my own little bubble.

I said some things to some people that I had to say, I made some resolutions to change my diet, cut down on mood-altering substances like alcohol and caffeine, get more exercise, and make some other changes in my life. I also gave myself a strict deadline to get myself together or just leave.

I don't know if that will come to fruit or not, but one week later, I feel better already.

the life of a teacher in korea is perfectly designed to encourage caffeine addiction and lack of motivation. And exercise is boring here.

OP, how are you sleeping lately? Frequently fatigue has the effect of making you feel worthless, and that everything around you's just sh1te. At least it does for me.
Listen, I know that your problems aren't going to go away with just a night's sleep. But a regular good night's kip will help you to deal better with it all.

Took three years in Thailand to feel burnt out. Then I changed countries. It's fresh again. If I'm lucky it will be another three years then time to change.

Mongolia is on my radar just now.

Kill an Ajosshi. Chop his body into little bits and make a stew. Invite the rest of the shifty Koreans you know over for dinner. Tell them your stew "give power."
