I am a little disturbed by the Idea of sitting around for a month and a half from end of July to September doing nothing. I have been told by my public school that I only get a week of vacation and the school wants me around for summer break even though there will be no students.

I am going to push for three weeks..at least, seems ridiculous to just stick around for face time. any experiences with modifying vacation time or strategies would be helpful.[/b]

Before the hypocrites get a chance to respond...

A contract is a contract. There are those that complain when an employer doesn't follow the contract, but in the same breath state that they want to bend the contract to their benefit.

It goes both ways. If you want them to be flexible, you need to be flexible as well.

Good luck.

Yeah, good point...I still want to know who has the final say when it comes to vacation..does the principal have the authority to say.."cool, if you want a couple weeks then take it" or is it the board of education. well.. can't hurt to push the issue a little..all they can say is no.

thanks for the feedback

At my last job I was given the 7 days as per the contract, and my strategies for trying to get more were a combination of the following; discussing, asking, cajoling, begging, pleading, whining, nagging, and then finally, not renewing my contract. I had bent over backwards for them, fulfilled every part of my contract and taken no sickdays or anything, and there was NO leeway on their part at all. So I moved to another province where I knew I'd get a better deal.
Good luck.

It might also be in your interest to check the SPECIFIC wording on your contract.

Many of them read 14 WORKING days for your holidays and that precludes the weekends.

1.Employee shall be entitled to a paid leave for a total of fourteen (14) working days during the term of the employment. Paid leave may be taken at any time school is not in session, and must be approved by Director at least 15 days in advance. Saturday and Sunday do not count as vacation days. If Employee renews the contract, up to 7 days of unused yearly paid leave may be carried over to the new contract period. This carried over paid leave may be used in the new contract period, but it may not be carried over into any subsequent contract period.

7 working days with weekends NOT included would mean an 11 consecutuve day holiday.

For example, using this JULY as an example, School ends on the 20th.

Start your holiday on the 21st and you would return on August 1st.

I would ask really nicely. My school has given me two extra (under the table) vacatio nweeks so far this year.
Another tactic might be to offer to teach a free English class during summer vacation. If you have to be there, you mgiht as well haev something to do. This might also earn you brownie points that you could cash in for vacation during winter vacation.

This is basicaly it. If you haven't been a jerk all year, your school should let you have this time off. No they don't have to, but what's the point really.

This is why you go with the program. Wear sandals? OK. Play volleyball? OK. My classes changed at the last minute? No problem. Camps and after school? No problem. Hey, can I have a few extra weeks off since there are no classes? No problem.

Exactly! I can't believe people would complain so muhc about these little things. I'd rather wear slippers everyday, and then have 2 extra weeks vacation. Don't sweat the small stuff.

OP, if I were you, start brigning in a litle treat (individually wrapped cakes, donuts, juices, etc) for your Prinicpal, VP, and office once a month or so. You really won't believe the change in attitude that you bought for 10 bucks.

Is the school making you stay at the school the whole time.
At my school I had two months off for winter vacation. I had one week vacation and four weeks of winter camp. I still had the month of Febuary off with no casses.
The school didn't make me come in for office hours. They said it was fine with them, if I wanted to travel around Korea. But I could not leave Korea for any reason.

Yeah that's the thing --- you can't leave Korea. Just hang out in your apartment or travel within Korea. That's what I'll probably end up doing.

Another thing is to at least see if you can leave early or something.

Worst happens, hope for air conditioning and spend your time planning your lessons, making printouts and flashcards, etc. Basically, find the color printer and make yourself happy. Just hope that you have air conditioning.

I have yet to give a full court press on the issue, but.. sort of torturous having this kind of Idle time during summer break and so close to so many cool spots. Cambodia is looking sooo nice.

Thanks
