I know I could do a search, but I'm lazy.
My Canadian passport expires December 10th this year. For all that's worth, how exactly do I get a new passport? Do I mail it? Do I have to go in person?
What's their address? What's their phone number?
Please advise. |

You should do it pretty soon. You cannot travel to most places with less than 6 months validity on your passport .
It takes 2-3 weeks for a renewal.
You need to go to the embassy in Seoul or the consulate in Busan.
You need to take:
your birth certificate
your passport
some other form of government ID
approved passport photos (photo mat types are not accepted)
(There is a place about 5 minutes from the embassy that does them for 10k won).
about 130k won
fill in 2 forms, talk to the consul and viola, 3 weeks later you have a shiny new passport. |

Thanks.
I might've lost my birth certificate and my only other government ID is my expired driver's license. Hmm. |

Better mail home and get a replacement. You cannot get a new passport without it. |

You might be screwed. You'll have to go back to Canada and get your ID replaced. |

Highly doubt it. I imagine my father could go in and get my birth certificate. |

Wow, that's interesting. To get my new British passport here in Korea they needed lots of things according to the notes, but in reality anything was acceptable. They said they needed a counter signatory who was a professional and knew me for two years. After a call to say that it was impossible for me to provide while here in Korea, they accepted a non-professional who had known me for less time.
No birth certificate or anything like that - just my old passport, photos, application form and money.
My advice for you would be to give your embassy a call and explain your situation. |

Passport Renewal (16 years of age or over)
* All three pages of the application form completed and signed (PPTC040)
* 2 photographs (5x7cm) against a plain white background and with a neutral expression and a mouth closed taken within 12 months
o One of the photos should be certified and signed by your guarantor
o The photographic paper must be of high quality with a matte, rather than a glossy, finish.
* Photo Specifications
* Original proof of Canadian citizenship (no copies or notarized copies)
* Any Canadian passport or travel document issued to you within the last Five years
* Documents to support identity issued by a federal, provincial or municipal authority in Canada, or local equivalent, and include the bearer's name and signature. For example:
Canadian or local Driver's license, Health card, Firearms licence, Provincial ID card, SIN, Local Alien Registration Card
* The fee
* Processing time: 3 weeks from the date of submission of duly completed applications
And they are NOT very amicable if you are missing your proof of citizenship. |

Yeah, I'll give the embassy a call tomorrow. I don't want to have to make someone rush and get me a document when I might not really need. Not that ttompatz's post wasn't useful. You never know, I guess. I they say one thing and then say another thing when I get there, it would be a big waste of time since I have to travel to Seoul a couple of hours. I have a New Brunswick driver's license and health card, but they're both expired. No SIN card, but I have the number. I still might have the birth certificate somewhere, but there's a big box, some smaller boxes, and my drawers to go through. Hopefully I'll find it.
Still wouldn't hurt for me to get a replacement for my birth certificate and maybe a SIN card. I still have lots of time. Passport doesn't expire until December. |

Start digging... been there, done that....
and you don't have long if you plan to do any travel. You cannot travel anywhere but home or the states if you have less than 6 months remaining on your passport (meaning no travel after June - no summer holiday). |

Yeah. I might as well get all those docs because I might need them in the future. Not looking forward to digging tonight. Ahhhhhh. Then I'll just send an e-mail home after the inevitable non-find asking for at least my birth cert to be sent.
At least I have time. Not going on holiday until August. |

Found my birth certificate! Yes!!! Under my wardrobe cabinet.
Just for anyone's info, you can download an application forms to replace your birth certificate and fax it to them with a note giving permission to whomever to pick it up. |

I was able to do everything by post - sent the docs etc to the embassy, including a return envelope with express postage, and they sent it back to me about two weeks later. Canadian rules may be different, however. |

Are you talking about your passport or your birth certificate? |
