Dear Forum,

Before I head back to the west I want to check out one (or possibly more) of the SE Asian countries. I am looking for any suggestions or recommendations of countries where I should be looking to go.

Here are some of the gritty details of my situation
Length of stay would be the whole month of June
Will be flying out of and back to Korea
A 1.5 million won budget (not including airfare)
I have a pretty open mind to new experiences and enjoy a variety of situations (from downtown partying to sightseeing)
I will also be traveling alone so I would prefer a somewhat safe destination.

Any help or added information that can be provided will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bobby

Hi,

For me personally, I would choose Malaysia. In particular, Borneo. I was just recently in the city of Kota Kinabalu, and let me tell you that it was quite the adventure. It really depends on what you like doing. If you like nature, this is the area for you....and it's quite safe as well.

As for money, things here aren't that expensive. You can get a hostel for about $5 a night. Food is also quite cheap depending on where you want to eat. In Kota Kinabalu if you go to the market, you can get fresh fish for about $1 a fish. So quite good pricing. Travel is cheap within parts of the island....as long as you take bus and even planes through air asia are quite cheap.

Things to do? Lots, more than what I could do in a week. You can check out nature reserves (see elephants, rhinos, proboscis monkeys, orang utangs), go to the islands and dive (you can get certified for about $200-300), or go snorkelling for cheap, you can also check out the caves in Miri, or you can climb the tallest Mt. in SE asia (mt. Kinabalu), or do river cuises, check out waterfalls, and more.

So this is my recommendation. I've also heard though that Thailand is quite good, but have never been there.

If you have any more questions about Malaysia though, let me know.

Hope this helped a bit.

Mike

Dear Bobby,

Here is an idea which may not have occured to you.

Rather than spending your money and time (and personal worth) on ostentatious consumption

--how about doing something charitable with the money!?

Just have a look at a map; excepting Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Brunei, just about every single destination you could reach by air in eight hours or less is a seriously third-world country.

Excluding airfare, the amount of money you mention having available for your holiday is about what average families will make in a whole year --nevermind the lower-class majority.

You are evidently a person of wealth, skill and knowledge; how about putting some of your financial and personal assets to GOOD use? How about some charity work?

How about setting up an affordable educational institute? You could hire a few local teachers and still have enough for renting or constructing the teaching space, and maybe even a bit at the end to donate supplies to your institute.

Nah --forget it; just blow it all self-indulgently like everyone else does.

Yours truly,
Ari

If you're a bit sporty you could try what i did for a month or so last year. I went to Thailand and spent 6 weeks training at a Muay Thai boxing gym. It was absolutely awesome!! met some fantastic people, learnt loads and came back the fittest ive ever been.
The option was there to train 6 hours a day six times a week, though to be honest i rarely did a entire 6 hours in a day. there was a load of other westerners there of all standards and ages (literally 16-60) so you dont feel out of place. you can just do it for fitness or you could train seriously and the trainners would put you in for a professional fight in a stadium in front of a few hundred people. absolutely amazing experience. its alot like being back at uni. the night life is great and instead of going to some boring lecture you learn a pretty lethal martial art.
there's plenty of gyms all over the country, many in Bangkok. the one i went to was in Rawai on the island of Phuket www.rawaimuaythai.com

yeah, spending money while traveling doesn't contribute whatsoever to a country's economic growth or development. Rolling Eyes

FYI, there is no connection to education and development.

A school is cool and all, but if those teachers aren't very good, it is pretty pointless.

Anyway OP, you could fly to singapore and take a month going from there up to Bangkok, and fly back to Seoul from there. That would give you enough time to get a sampling of both Malaysia and Thailand.

this is the same woman who thought it was ok to sell a child for child porn, so I'd take anything she says with a grain of salt.

My point exactly.
Selling children for porn and rape is OK but going on a vacation is not?
I wonder if she is IGTG's sock.

Obviously I have hit a nerve by suggesting that Bobby do something charitable with some of the money he's earned. Denial, displacement and defense mechanisms have come out in full flourish!

bucheon bum, ajgeddes, jinju and freethought, great work on reinforcing and rationalizing conspicous consumption!

Sorry, I didn't mean to upset anyone's self-absorbed narcissism.
