So your Hogwan Director asks you a favor, please please find me a new teacher/replacement, whatever.
Don't DO IT. If you do, then you are working as a recruiter, which is outside your visa conditions.
Recruiters need to be licenced!!
Next time some tight buttt hogwan director who wants to save money on recruiting fees, asks you to find someone. Just tell them you would like to help. BUT it's illegal, and you don't want me breaking the law do you? Mr kind Hogwan director. |

Let me guess...
You're a recruiter that lost commission because the school found somebody in-house? |

If I am recruiting someone from outside of Korea how is this enforced.
My brother recruited them, yes, that's the ticket. Please Mr. Hogwan owner have that check sent to my brother, thank you.

Recommending your friend is acting as a recruiter? I don't think so. Surely one might be able to spin that as an excuse to a bad boss why you don't want to lift a finger to help him find a new sucker. "No, sorry, it would appear if I can't volunteer at an orphanage in Korea, I can't act as a recruiter." But assuming the relationship between you and your school is a good one and you have a friend who you think would be a perfect fit, I can't see how the matter would wind up on the desk of immigration. |

No, Not a recruiter, and YES it is illegal!
Teaching free at an orphanage is illegal, playing a guitar in public is illegal, so is this.
It's all about the Korean government controlling the foreigner.
You do something illegal, even though something so innocent, it gives the hogwan director more control over you. |

i agree with the OP in principle - for a lot of teachers their boss expects and then later demands in a lot of cases that the teacher who is leaving should find a replacement. i've been in that situation and its not good - especially when the person you found either sucks or leaves after a month of doing the job!
however i do find the OP's tone to be a little alarmist - all this talk of what is illegal and not is irritating. not standing during the korean national anthem is probably illegal too, that doesnt mean i'm going to do it every time! |

If he's anything like my students, he's already forgotten them. Heck, the guys probably had 10 years of English classes and still doesn't know what "left" or "right" are. So no, you didn't teach him anything. You're safe. |

And the hagwon owner will turn himself in for employing an illegal worker?
Let's approach it this way: If I clean up a spill a kid made, I'm working as a janitor at my place of business and that's illegal? If I help my school with a promotional web site, I'm working as an illegal web developer? I bring my coworkers food, I'm working as an illegal caterer?
Can you see the thrust of this argument? If I do those things for the hagwon down the street (no idea why I'd want to), sure, I guess that would be illegal. But for my own school? A non-reoccurring task that's ultimately of value to my employer/students and performed within the four walls of my employer's business. That's illegal? I really, really, really can't see that. If you have some concrete evidence to the contrary, please offer it. If you're a lawyer and you're not telling us, then your opinion might count for something.
But your logic doesn't really hold any water. |

Whatever. You wouldn't be working as a recruiter: you'd be doing office work for your boss. |

In addition, why not grab the chance to hand pick your coworker instead of leaving it up to your clueless boss and recruiter that's typically as clueless and just interested in collecting his fee? How has leaving hiring decisions up to your boss and a recruiter worked out for y'all? Do they manage to get you great coworkers or guys who never learned to wipe themselves and spend their year contract trying to borrow money from you?
The OP is clearly a glass is half empty type. Why not view it as "here's a chance to get someone good and qualified, my boss defers to my better judgment" vs casting it as simply your boss is too cheap to go with a recruiter. Like recruiters in Korea are, as a rule, the most capable crackerjacks on the planet and always do it right. Isn't it at all possible your boss is being sensible for a change? |

So? 99% of those sort of regulations are never enforced and unless you're remarkably idiotic you'll never get in trouble for doing something like that. |
