Korea Sparkling. In no way can Korea be associated with cleanliness. The place is disgustingly dirty. The garbage, snot, etc. that litters the ugly, ugly cities and towns.
Any one of the following would be more appropriate.
Korea: Land of Morning Phlegm
Korea: Home of the Ajoshi
Korea: Sole of Asia
Korea, Horking
Korea: We Reserve the Right Not to Serve Foreigners
Korea: Just Don't Bother |

Korea -- It'll serve you right!
This was originally my pet ad for Korean Air. And you can imagine them liking it. "Oh yes, we offer best service! "

So I wonder simone... can you tell us what is like to work in this field? What challenges do you face, what stories can you tell us? Do you think my view above, which I think is a common one on Dave's at least, is accurate or do you see it differently, having more experience? |
Oh, I don't have that much experience. My true marketing/branding love is consumer electronics, but I like Seoul enough to honestly try to sell it internationally...
I think the problem is being one person. I'd love to have an online "survey group" of foreigners to run ideas by, and be able to give statistical analyses on preferences, etc. quickly and scientificially, but at this point, I have to run with my gut. (Which hasn't let me down yet.)
In general, the people who trust me trust me well enough that they hear my logic and are fully behind the idea. Generally, people only become true "Simone Footsoldiers" after I've saved their ass once or twice. (~70% of current coworkers).
But the holdouts who just don't listen to me, well, don't. They resent my position (usually just one level above them) and they do whatever they originally would have done, and when the shit blows up in their faces, blink their wide open eyes and say in their most innocent tone of voice: "Well, I thought it was just YOUR opinion, not the general opinion of most westerners."
I don't overkill with data when people ask me a quick question. If they seem unsure, I'll provide backup info. I give them an authoritative answer, and if my personal opinion defers from the "conventional wisdom" I let them know that, too. But I'd told this guy that we simply "cannot" use the ad copy that was in front of me. He said "okay" and then completely ignored my opinion.
So anyway, it blew up, some members of an ethnic minority in Korea were highly offended, complained, and it was all changed very quickly, but could have been avoided if buddy had listened to me in the first place. He also knows that I could have made him look seriously bad here, and didn't. I own his ass now.... but still don't trust him one bit.
Now he fears me. That's okay. |

Nope - he seemed really suprised... he actually cc'd a bunch of Korean names as well on the email - He might be a tad displeased at the final results, especially since he's getting credit for them. |

Wow, that is one of the wittiest lists I've come across on Dave's for awhile. Do you work in the industry, Bingo? Well Done! |

In a nutshell, two points: One: It's supposed to be slightly aspirational. Two: Because of so much "brand confusion" foreigners have between North and South Korea, everyone knows that North Korea is grey and lifeless, so by contrast the South is Sparkling.

I think he should have been more direct. "South Korea: Neon Lit, Like Japan! |

In defense of the slogan (I haven't seen the visual design) maybe the Korean tourism industry is thinking long term. It's unrealistic to expect Korea to become a tourist destination overnight so maybe it's intended to complement a 10 year plan.
Maybe their aims are to
a. Create awareness of Korea as a possible destination.
b. Distinguish it from North Korea.
Advertising doesn't have to be honest to generate interest, so the fact that korea isn't sparkling doesn't really matter for attracting tourists to an area (granted they won't return!). They might be aiming for a small percentage of the tourists that visit thailand, china, japan etc. to 'stop on over'. A tourist here will spend a hell of a lot more than a backpacker in Thailand, so they might be interested in a different kind of tourist...one with money to spend and not too keen on going off the beaten track (package tours).
I can think of a few images to complement sparkling:
- The suns reflection over the beach at Jeju
- The snows of Soraksan
- Sokcho waterpia or one of the many sauna, steam rooms around the country
- The traditionally white costumes, silky hanbok
- Porcelein
- The lights at insadong at night time
- Club lights at hongdae
- The Lotte department store...and other shopping features.
Korea offers the conveniences of the west with the exoticness of the east...and relatively cheap. It's not a backpackers paradise, but a middle aged well-to-do couple type destination.
Sure, teachers that have been here a few months don't see it that way, but I reckon the country could be sold in 1 week packages and people would be quite happy with their time here.

It doesn't make any sense. I associate the word "sparkling" with cleanliness, a kind of wine, and jewels. |
It'll make sence for well off tourists here on a weeks tour. It's not supposed to appeal to your(worker in Korea) sence of Korea, but what can be presented/packaged to a well off tourist.
Sparkling can also be associated with health (purity of colors makes something sparkle) and vitality (white teeth) , also dynamicism (Korean dancers, vibrant colors used in traditional ceremonies etc.) and cleanliness (traditional white korean clothes)...also honesty. These qualities could be linked to the people of Korea.
Everything except the dynamic nature I consider to be true (cleanliness meaning personal hygiene and not clean streets!).

Notice that Sparkling, is spelled incorrectly 'Spakling.' I too think that 'Korea Sparkling' should be canned, but if they are gonna use it, they might as well get it right. |

Thank you for this. I have made a note of it (and of the other grammatical errors on the page) and will use it in my upcoming presentation. Thanks! |

I really don't think it's all that bad. It needs the comma, though. The comma makes it unusual and a little pensive.
The logo is trash but in more skilled hands it could be a lot better.
Personally I like the slightly Konglishy ring it has to it. That's pretty Korean, if you ask me.
Here in Toronto, we have "Toronto Unlimited" which was expensive and a lot worse.

At least Toronto Unlimited fits the locale:
1. unlimited influx of ppl to an already crowded and impossibly congested city core
2. unlimited growth in noise, pollution and a new, but very familiar smell
3. unlimited use of what should be a gorgeous lakefront, but instead is a highway.
shame, cuz it used to be a nice city. |
