Demi Moore for her role in G.I.Jane or Tom Hanks for Castaway.

Know anyone else who has sacrificed glamour for glory?

Christian Bale went from 182 to 120 pounds for 2004's The Machinist, and then went up to 220 pounds for Batman Begins.

When you look back at the movie The Untouchables....if it hadn't been for Sean Connery stepping down from his usual starring role, and wisely taking a supporting role...the movie would have sucked large. Not to mention...Connery walked away with the Oscar for his efforts. Most everything was rather sad about this movie. Kevin Costner was not believeable as Ness. DeNiro was wasted. The movie twisted facts really badly. (Remember the rooftop fight between Costner's Elliot Ness and Frank Nitty. Costner eventually sends Nitty over thhe edge for the big fall. History tells us that rather than go to prison, Nitty walked to some railroad tracks near his home and blew his brains out.)

JT, you have a point there but I think Sean Connery didn't really shine due to his supporting role. He was very much the same back in Time Bandits and a league of extraordinary gentlemen.

Others I would give mention are :

- Ben Kingsley for Ghandi
- Choi Min-sik for Oldboy (though that's probably his bread and butter role)
- Daniel Day Lewis - My left foot

The blonde girl who played a serial killer, the name escapes me.

Her and Tom Hanks in Cast Away for sure.

Another pair that I thought of were Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"
They did some huge prep for that movie.

Vic Morrow in 'the Twilight Zone.' (He died.)
Marlon Brando in 'the Island of Doctor Moreau.' (His dignity died.)
DeNiro in 'Raging Bull.' (He went from looking like Travis Bickle to looking like a rubenesque James Gandolfini. That can't be healthy.)

Eric Bana in Chopper

In his previous movie 'The Castle' Bana goes from a skinny Greek kick-boxing loving nerd to 'Chopper' where he brilliantly portrays Mark 'Chopper' Reid - a massive hairy Aussie thug and arguably one of the hardest bastards to ever walk the red continent.

How he bulked up that much and got that hairy is beyond me.

He has never played a better role or been in a better movie since.
