|
|
This was such a strange experience in left field.
I went to a English speaking church service tonight and after the service, I was meeting people and shaking hands. I met a Korean woman (maybe 27 years old) who introduced herself as "Beautiful Me" as her English name after shaking my hand. I laughed and said that is so self conceited and walked away with a dirty sense to run as fast I could. She agreed cheerfully and proudly about it. LOL. (she was not a specially gorgeous, but average, not ugly, but not a han-style model)
Am I out of line? This is inside a church. LOL. |

Koreans introducing themselves with English names are self-conceited weirdos anyway. |

I would tell her my name is lovely princess. hehehe Some Korean women can't stand it if a white girl thinks of herself as a princess. They want to be the only princess. Like a girl I work with. I went to her birthday party and gave her a present. Later, when it was MY day, she didn't come to my party or give me a gift. See...she couldn't stand not being the one getting the attention. |

Pretty much everyone who's taught English here has experience with a woman in her 20's or 30's introducing themselves as "pretty(insert name here)" or "beautiful(insert name here). It's extremely silly and childish.
The funny thing is that the ones who do this are never the good looking ones. They are usually very average. I've never heard an ugly one say it. After they say it, they usually give a little giggle and an inquisitive look. It's in this look that you see the desperation, the sad hope that you will happily agree with them and say "Yes, you are pretty/beautiful!".
It's a sign of childish insecurity and I usually pretend that I didn't hear it. |

Most of the worst names come from their western teachers.
I've met two called "Irish",one "Silver Kim" and a "Shiela",all named by their previous teachers. |

Maybe her name is "미나" and she's trying to make a joke based on that. |

I don't know. I've seen some pretty awful names chosen by themselves. I taught a "President" and a "Terrorist" and a "Bin Laden" and an "Ultraman". |

There are some jokers around. If someone told me there name was bin laden or something equally stupid, I'd tell them my name was Apollo Ohno Takeshima Yakasuni |

"MI" means beautiful.
Get it?? She was just being friendly and trying to be funny. Why take it so seriously??
Do come back when you can crack a sponataneous joke using wordplay in Korean, in a way that koreans find funny. |
