Where's the most unacceptable place that you've seen a Korean dude hork a loogie? Last week I had to order oil for my apartment. The ajoshi shows up and (after letting himself into my apartment without knocking) heads to the furnace room. It's situated next to my kitchen. There's only a tiny laundry space separating the kitchen (where I'm cooking dinner) and the furnace room. The adoshi steps into the room and immediately coughs up a loogie and horks it onto the furnace room floor - two and a half steps from my kitchen where I'm cooking dinner! Shocked I snapped. I'm already pissed that he didn't knock on my door before entering my home. Now he's horking in my apartment. I rush into the furnace room, point to the yellow loogie on the floor, and sternly told him that he's in my home and that I'd appreciate it if he didn't hork on the floor. The neanderthal ajoshi simply looked shocked that I would be so annoyed that he was horking within the confines of my home and two steps from where I'm preparing my dinner.

So I'm interested. Where's the most outrageous place you've seen an ajoshi hork a loogie?

I've a friend who saw an adoshi hork a loogie onto the floor of a supermarket then proceed to rub it in with his foot. I've personally seen them hork on the floor of pubs and restaurants. (I won't even get started on the snot covering my apartment stairs.) A few months ago I took the airport bus to the airport and sat in the seat behind the driver. Over the period of one hour he horked out the window nine times. A few years ago I was in a bakery and the guy making the bread horked a disgusting loogie into the sink where he was working. Shocked

Korean men are disgusting. The women are so refined and pretty, yet the same race managed to produce the adoshi. Darwin's missing link methinks. Very Happy

Why should you complain? Don't you know that old people, ajoshis and ajummas have "carte blanche" on what they can do in this country? You just have to sit back and take it like the rest of us. Very Happy (yes, I'm kidding)

BTW, I have never heard of "horking loogies". Where are you from? Australia?

We would say spitting out boogers or phlem.

I've seen a few women here who'd beat out adjoshis in a horking contest. Disgusting.

I've always said "hawk a loogie" although I'm not sure how to spell it.

I've generally been lucky insofar as my bad personal habits tend to be accepted in Korea. This includes coming to work hungover and spitting loogs.

Hmm, that was actually in Japan, but when I was an exchange student there, I lived in a dorm full of korean and chinese exchange students. Showers were in one big room, without privacy other than some clouds of steam. There was a couple of koreans I identified early on and stayed well clear from as much as possible: They had the habit while in the shower of throwing those huge wads of slimy spittle around, without any care. I was actually quite happy for the loud horking sound: it served well a as "run away!" signal. Being in their early 20's they still had some work to perfect the horking technique, but there was definite enthusiasm there. Besides, the dorm manager, also korean and 200% ajosshi would give them regular coaching.

But that's probably the least of the charming habits they had in the shower. Like spending waay too much time washing their privates, in a verry suspicious way. Worst of all to me: Sometimes on weekends they would just sit in the shower room for an hour, leave the hot water running on their legs, and have a smoke or twelve. They would then fling the cigarette butts around the shower room. Complained about that one to the dorm manager but he did not seem to find much wrong with it. His wife was doing the weekly cleanup.

Chinese students I have to say were a model of hygiene and manners compared to that. Only exception was the kitchen. They would make fan-ta-stick tasting chinese food, but after they were done with it the kitchen was an absolute war-zone, with *things* splashed all over the place that you just don't want to know what (or who) they came from. Funnily enough the dorm manager had a problem with that - HE was doing the cleanup for that part, until he hired a chinese student to do it.

Director at my old hogwan used to do it on the floor of the hogwan. Yes, the floor where we were required to wear slippers to keep it "clean". Yes the floor where he had invested US$1,000,000 to buy and furnish in a swanky part of town. That was only the beginning of his incredible stupidity.

Ok. A) At the risk of sounding like an apologist, that's a pretty nasty generalization. I have plenty of male students who have the style and grace of a laundry peg, though sadly not the hygiene, but plenty more whose carefully permed and manicured coifs even more "refined and pretty" than half the girls in my class.

B) Don't call Korean girls "refined and pretty" until you've spent some time in their washrooms. There are loogies on the floor there too. Sad

Korean women are refined, eh?! In my forty months in country, I've witnessed at least 300 or 400 hundred local females hucking a looie in the most disgusting manner possible.

By the way, their table manners are equally disgusting.

One high school boy hand in hand with his girlfriend let one drop about 2 feet from my shoes, just a few days ago. Niiiiice. I have seen that so much here. B/G friend walking together and the guy lets a nice lugee go. The things that would get me slapped back home. Oh well, if he's got to carry the purse all day, I guess he's allowed.

Regarding women spitting. seen it dozens of times here and not just by the grandma either. Hotties with mini skirts, boots and the cool bag have let one go while I'm walking by. That still grosses me out.

Ash trays.

Nothing is worse than going to shake one out and having a rogue butt bungee jump it's way back up to slap you on the wrist.

The one that bothered me the most was probably a bus driver spitting on the floor of his own bus. It was the loudest one I've ever heard.

Spitting in ashtrays/floor of restaurants is equally disgusting.

I dated a Korean guy who would spit in the ashtray in my apartment. The relationship didn't last too long.
