Our school has been under construction. I live next to my school. Here is a construction guy who decided to take a nap on the old bed I threw out. There was another guy with him at first, but I missed the chance to get that photo (sorry gang-ah-gee and Octavious Hite).

And the top one is a box-spring.

Not very comfortable.

This is when I add that the mattress sat out in the rain FOR A MONTH before it got hauled away a few days ago. He slept on it the day it got hauled out. I wonder what bugs set-up home inside of it in that time?

Good for him. Everyone likes catching some ZZZs on the job. When I used to work for a federal agency, I would sleep off hangovers in the filing room. I would "file" for hours on Mondays.

It was probably the one rare opportunity for him to actually sleep on a mattress. A lot of people here just sleep on the floor, but I wonder how many actually like it..

That's really cool that he went to sleep on a discarded mattress in the middle of the job in broad daylight! It really is a joy to see that kind of thing. It's just so human....

Yeah, how do Koreans sleep so easilly and peacefully at the drop of a hat?

I have said this many times to Koreans...you don't work hard, your just at work long...case in point! What they do in a 10 hour work day, I can get done in 6. I blame it all on useless management...

I've seen some weird-ass, fugged-up topics on Dave's ESL Cafe, but Korean construction workers' naptime habits???

As it happens, I fancy myself something of an expert on this matter, and so should you. There is a set period during each day when, after they've had GROUP LUNCH and GROUP SOJU & COOKIES, the crew (or most of them, depends what work they do) will take GROUP NAP.

Where? If there isn't a container office on the site, there will at some point come into being a room or an area inside the building under construction that has been designated as the official changing room. In there they take their naps on a pile of sponge-foam yo's thoughtfully provided by me. But if the weather is nice, as it is today, some will find a cozy resting spot outdoors.

At our last project, the captain of the painting crew liked to sleep in one of the bathtubs we had removed from the original home. He asked if I would arrange to have that bathtub hauled away at the end of the project, because he wanted to take his naps in it in the meantime. I was happy to oblige, partly because everyone had a good snicker at the sight of him snoozing in that tub.

In his late 60s, he's easily one of the tallest Koreans I've ever met. His towering height comes in handy in his particular line of work, as he can hit exterior spots with a standard ladder and a long-handled roller that we'd otherwise have to build a raised platform to reach. I call him "Stretchee".

Considering all the hard work and soju, they NEED those naps. It's not laziness or mismanagement.
