It would appear that Speaker of the House Pelosi (D-CA) imagines herself as an Undersecretary of State, at the very least. She hops on a jet at taxpayer expense to break bread with the Syrian dictator al-Assad against the wishes of both the current administration and the embassy in Damascus.

Her justification, in quintessential liberal fashion, is that if there is even a glimmer of hope that she can persuade the Syrian leader to acknowledge American security concerns, why by gum she wants to give him the chance. Keep hope alive, keep hope alive!

Now the Syrians broadcast her visit on national television and so did Al-Jazeera, giving the appearance that it is the American leader who is being intractable. Pelosi insists she's not playing politics, posturing for the American public so the Dems can claim at their convention that at least they tried to reason with those who abet terrorism in Iraq and Lebanon. Oh, and never mind that the Lebanese leaders deplored her visit to Syria, though they treated her politely.

Yes, it's another clueless California girl to the rescue just like good ol' Jane Fonda during the Vietnam War.

The question, however, is whether this diplomatic is forgivable as a naive and willful act of a liberal, a willful act of partisanship, or more egregiously a counterproductive maneuver in violation of the longstanding principle of separation of powers?

(As to the latter supposition, I am contending that while Congress reserves the right to make treaties and help shape foreign policy, it is the executive branch which reserves to itself the right to actually conduct that policy.)

For you leftists, try to get beyond a knee-jerk response and employ at least an ounce of logic in your rebuttals, if that's possible.

I hope your outrage is also directed at these guys:

But I'm sure you'll just shrug that off.

So if Bush won't talk to the players in the region, and he doesn't want anyone else to talk to the players, how the hell is any of this going to get fixed? (Besides your and Jinju's plan of mass Muslim slaughter).

Nothing personal but I don't really care about anything you write anymore. I would like to say it has the potential to be interesting but I just cannot take someone seriously who is so politically unaware of their own biases.

Why would Steve even acknowledge that a delegation of Republicans visited Syria? Because he has nothing better to do then peddle his right wing extremist views and compare Pelosi to Jane Fonda. In Steve's mind it's not even an issue. Everything is the fault of the "liberals" in the US.

Steve's a plant, just like gopher. Steve plays the Bill O to gopher's McCain, the supposed centrist. Both complete wastes of time. Steve because he was never anything but a troll, gopher because he was never anything other than a Republican lying through his teeth that he was a Democrat so he could sway Dems to the Republicans way. (This is fact. He is registered Republican and voted Republican after claiming to be a Democrat all the way up to the election.)

Seriously, both are a waste of your time. And, most likely one another's sock.

If the actual topic is of interest to anybody, and you have TVUPlayer, you ought to check out Fox News right now (why does TVU only have FOX???). They are talking about it. Funny stuff! Apparently this is "treason" and "insubordination"?

There are three branches government; not one. The Executive Branch has failed miserably on the domestic and global fronts, overall. These are facts. The larger American public agreed, and that is why they, including Conservatives, Liberals, and Independents chose to give America the democrats a majority. They don't trust the administration's judgement, and I frankly don't, and Bush is acting as if the people didn't rebuke his administration with the way they voted for House of Representatives and the Senate. Also, others recommended that people talk to Syria in the Republican Party. Does that mean they became Hanoi Joes, Jacks, and Jills? That's nonsense. Next, we'll hear how Pat Buchanan is on the Left. I don't agree with the characterization of Gopher with Steve. They have their own views. I feel Gopher is closer to the centre. As someone remarked, members of the GOP have visited Syria. This is nothing new.
The Executive Branch has failed the people, so what do you expect?

Actually, I didn't say they were the same in their stated views. I said they were both Republican and that neither was worth your time. However, I suggest you listen to what his final solution always is: stay the course. He'll toss out reams of data and lists of books and then, in the end, say it's either A. unknowable or B. should just stay as is.

Absolutely in fact Gopher was also involved in the 9-11 conspiracy by Bush.

Just curious do you really believe what you write?

I sometimes wonder if you aren't a plant to turn people off to the Democrats. Since even liberals on this board think you are loony - I would say you are doing a good job.

Remember EFL trainer is a 9-11 conspiracy theorist, sorry I mean 9-11 truther Rolling Eyes isn't that what you people call yourselves?

Never said that but go ahead a spread lies since your humor is so lame.

Just as I predicted, most of the posters have nothing much to say in response to the question posed. Gee, what a big surprise!

As for the Republican delegation, if they went without prior approval from the White House, then I also deplore it.

Adventurer:

Until the Dems broke with tradition during the Vietnam War, it was always the Executive Branch who initiated state visits. Even the Department of State answers to the Secretary of State, a Cabinet appointee, on this score. It's in the interest of consistency of approach, a tenet of foreign policy implementation until the liberals decided that they knew what was best. Carter is an especially egregious example of this tactic. It has nothing to do with whether one agrees or disagrees with the policies: that's what going to the polls is supposed to settle.

Pelosi is welcome to hit the campaign trail for the Democrat of her choice, and barnstorm for her views if she so chooses. Nothing more, nothing less.
