Observations:
BEP chicks are way hotter
BEP original WAS a parody in the first place. Therefore Morrisette parodied a parody which is lame. |

I'd a guessed you'd be a Black Eyed Peas fan since you don't like music.
You did call music " the basest form of art"!
Well, writing and crafting a song, even a bad one, takes a h3ll of a lot more talent than taking a picture! |

1. Im not a fan of BEP. Ive heard 2 songs by them in my life.
But its pretty obvious that video and song is a parody on the whole bling bling, booty booty hip hop culture. Hence Morisette missed the point totally and her parody comes out looking stupid and weak.
2. Yes I did call it the basest of artforms and its constantly being proven to me by the billions of music threads. Music appeals to the masses more than any artform and therefore it is the basest artform. Just look at the thread on painting and sculpture - 7 replies in all, while threads on the Rolling Stones and electronic music get pages of replies. It wasnt a value judgement because I also like music, it was simply an obesrvation of the fact that music appeals to the largest audience. Actually it was a value judgement but not on music itself but the people who cant be bothered to be interested in anything but music.
3. You are free to have your opinions. Unlike some on this board, I dont pee in my pampers when someone doesnt like what I like. |

I watched that this morning, and I'm glad someone else is taking note. As much as I enjoy the BEP, I don't think their video is taking the piss, and although Alanis is clearly not built to grind (nor does she really have the moves) this just goes to show how she has built her career without the help of "her lady-lumps."
I've got a mental list of women who can be beautiful without selling themselves like this:
Gwen Stephani is marvellously sexy, but she's on the list too. She works it with class and dignity. |

To me the BEP video is so obviously taking the piss...... The Morrisette video is like someone parodying Airplane.... |

So, Jinju, what you are admitting to is that you are an elitist?
Am I correct?
Because music appeals to so many people, it is somehow less great than other forms of art?
Is that the reasoning you're going for?
I guess you're one of those types that only likes something if very few others like it- the elitist snob style.
Don't worry. You'll grow up someday and not give a *beep* if other people like or don't like something and make up your own mind without trying to pose like you're so cool and different from "the masses".
For now, you're dissing music as a lesser art form because it appeals to people in a far greater and deeper way than say painting, sculpture or photography. You've even come onto these boards and dissed people for being so passionate about music and not so much about other art forms.
Wow, man! You must be a real hit with the ladies! |

Unfortunately, I don't think we should give the Black Eyed Peas that much credit. I mean, seriously, have you ever seen Fergalicious?

It's not parody. Fergie ferg is really that ridiculous. |

The two songs are brilliant in their own way...but, man, I really like the way AM arranged it so that the lyrics can linger long enough for us to contemplate the silliness of the song. |

Isn't it ironic that someone who did a song as cheesy as 'Ironic' is making a parody? Don't you think?
Calling today's pop music an art form is like calling reality TV art. Yeah, it requires some minimal sense of creativity (or, more accurately, an understanding of the wishes of the masses), but it hardly compares to something that is actually intellectually stimulating or challenging.
Yes, I realize that makes me sound like an elitist. Yes, some of the music happens to be popular. Screw me.
Now, if we want to talk about how hot of a pop star Fergie is, well then hell yeah. Who needs class when you've got ass and sass!? |

Well, yes... and no.
Insofar as it was a parody it was subtle, way sublime, because the sad fact is that millions of Americans share the perspective characterized in that song and could gladly sing about "her hump" with absolutely no hint of self-deprecatory humour. The video is obviously over the top but in a way to appeal still to the crude masses, except for the barenakedladies (the band) kind of ending, where the guys rub their own chests in a silly moment of poking fun at themselves after the fact, a typical modern response to holding values without foundations, being serious while knowing there's no reason to be so. Let's not mistake modernity for parody.
I don't think the BEP song was a parody. A parody of what? making fun of the cultural movement toward obsessing about and objectifying a body part? I'm tempted to say no, that it actually contributes to that, but then again I hope to hell that even the greatest adherents of that perspective would see the silliness of it when presented in its extreme.
That said, the AM version is clearly using techniques of parody, but is doing so for satire
Neither artist is being at all subtle. |

BEP's song was satirical, not parody. Morrissette's was parody. |

If BEP's song is satire then there must be two radically different meanings of the word. |

this thread is dumb.
BEP made a song to sell records, it is most definitely not a parody or satire of modern "culture." It is a full fledged part of said culture. My humps isn't serious because it's a pop song, therefore, it's meant to be playful. However, it is not exposing any irony and it is not rediculing the lifestyle it portrays.
Alanis Morissette's, on the other hand, is cleary a satire. Of course, satire and parody generally blend together so arguing over the two is really really lame. |
