My students (pre-med) told me that there was an incident in a hospital which involved a student doctor (not a resident yet) giving the wrong amount of anesthetic to an 14 year old girl who was to have surgery for a broken arm. Apparently, too much was given and the girl died. We had a great discussion about who was at fault (the student or the doctor in charge) and how THEY would feel if the same thing happened to them.
Has anyone seen this article in an English newspaper or on-line? I did a search but found nothing.
(Mods: Wasn't sure if this was General (as it has to do with living in Korea) or Off-Topic!!) |

Hmm, sounds like an urban legend to me. Obviously the doctor who was in charge is at fault. You can't be at fault for screwing up something you're not trained to do. The doctor should lose his license. |

Hmmm being a medical student myself, in some way I would say that the doctor in charge should take the blame. S/he is the one who should have been checking and guiding the student.
By the way, the doctor could "lose" his licence by not being able to practice - getting struck off the register. |

Students have to learn somehow!! You don't just study to be a surgeon in the classroom!! The "teaching doctor" is supposed to monitor the student to make sure that s/he doesn't mess up, but in this case, no one quite knows how the error was made. No one knows if the doctor checked the dosage before the student gave it or not. There is also the possibility that the girl had an allergic reaction. I can understand the parents' reluctance to have an autopsy done, but I think it might provide some answers IF the results are done by an outside source and published.
Some other theories proposed by my students were: over-work, lack of sleep, drinking the night before (by the supervising doctor), inattention by the attending doctor.
We also talked about what if this happened to them? Would they continue to study to be a doctor or give up.
One of the best discussion classes I've ever had! |

Yep. That was a Soon Chun Hyang hospital, that's the uni I teach at.
Stuff like this happens all the time but is usually covered up. I could tell you some stories...
I'm glad they are doing something about it. |

Yeah, the boys in my class were talking about it last night because one of them kinda knew the girl (same school). Scary and sad situation. |

The parents shouldn't have any say in whether there is an autopsy. If more information is needed to understand what happened (ie who, if anyone, was at fault) then there should be no choice on the matter. Those involved have to be cleared of reprimanded. Period. |

I think they were reluctant to have anyone from that hospital do the autopsy. But I could be wrong... |

Ok, I was talking to some other students today and they told me that the girl had been dead for 6 days before the doctors told the parents!! If this is true, WTF were they doing???
There also seems to be a question of a wrong diagnosis...not sure what...but a student said that that particular Soonchunhyang hospital (there are 4) is infamous for wrong diagnoses.
Apparently, there is now a news blackout about the subject...but if I were the parents, I'd sure as heck talk to the media! |

I really don't think med students in America administer anesthesia. But I'd have to ask my doctor friend to be sure.

Agreed. But if there was a doctor error, the attending should definitely be responsible. |
