I was mulling over the idea of simply buying a beginner-level pronunciation book for the technical high school where I'll be teaching.
Has anyone tried a "pronunciation-only" approach? It seems that might be the way to go since the students are (according to the FT already working there) very low-level learners.
Any thoughts or book recommendations? |

Pronunciation alone - just like grammar alone - won't produce much of anything useful. And even grammar and pronunciation without some confidence and fluency and vocabulary - won't be very useful either.
Your students will need the whole package and every lesson should have a bit of each.
Keep it simple and fun and don't expect them to become fluent in one short semester. |

I agree with Zark, but I think the idea of picking up extra pronunciation books isn't a bad idea as a supplement. One of my coteachers loaned me her copy of the BCM Pronounce It Right Workbook and I use it to supplement the pronunciation part of my lessons. It gives me consonant sets to work on, as well as great example sentences and lists of minimal pairs. If I were you I'd wait 'till I got here and then head to Kim and Johnson's in Gangnam. |
