I don't eat the school lunches (I'm sorry, kimchi and fish aren't my idea of a good time) and I heard from people that your school or supervisor will reimburse you 2 000 a day if you are not eating lunch. Any truth to this? Am I owed any money because I am not eating the school lunches?

I guess it's possible as long as you tell them in advance, though I imagine every school will decide for itself whether to give you that concession or not.

Ask for a pay slip.
If it shows any deductions for lunch then ask for a reimbursement.

If you don't eat any school provided lunches then there should be NO deduction from your salary for food. check your pay slip. If you don't get one (usually not provided unless you ask), ASK for one. The admin office will print it off for you.

If you eat any school lunches (even just one) you will be billed for the whole month.

It's just the way it usually is. All or nothing. They don't have the ability (staff or need) to keep track of each staff member re:daily lunches on an individual/daily basis.

I stopped eating lunch at my old school because I didn't like the other teachers, principal or vice principal and didn't want to eat with them. So, I didn't have to pay for the lunches anymore. You aren't going to get reimbursed, but you won't have to pay in the future.

Like everyone else said. If you don;t eat them you don;'t pay for them.
I ate my school lunches the first month at my school, but I found the food to be poor quality and more often than not it was cold by the time I got served.

Just check that they don't continue to deduct it from your salary.

You wouldn't last a day in Rome with that attitude!

Sorry, just kidding. But 2000 won a day does add up, that's 10,000 a week and around 400,000 a year(you shouldn't be paying for lunch during the vacation period either).

I never liked tightwads.

I knew a guy a few years ago on our tour group who was so tight, he refused to pay for our group meals and preffered to eat these stupid sandwiches he made himself. I mean the tour was only 4 days long, but he refused to pay the extra 10 dollars a day for what were actually very good value meals. He lived on peanut butter sandwiches for the 4 days. And this dude was a millionaire!

Good God!!! You deserve trouble with the school if you complain about this to the principal. People like you wonder "Why do they hate me...? Why did the school screw me over in little ways all through the year...?". Your question explains why.

Every day I eat lunch at my high school. My high school is two years old and is well-funded. This is why our lunches are always tasty and have a good variety, I've been told. Many teachers here say other schools have terrible lunches. Maybe the OP's school serves poor food. This may be true.

I pay 2,500 KRW for lunch every day. It's a lot cheaper than buying food for lunch. Also, I eat dinner here, and it's good stuff -- pulgogi, beef, pineapple, fruit, plum/apple juice, tasty salad. Dinner is the same price.

I leave school at 4pm, and walk back at 6pm for dinner. I've saved a lot of money this way.

I hope you find a solution to fit your needs.

I eat school lunches and I am never billed. It depends on the school.

As some posters have suggested, get all hot & bothered when a REAL issue arises(e.g. being screwed over w/pension, overtime, etc). But school lunches?! Yeesh. If you don't want to eat the school lunch everyday, fine. But what amount of stereotyping reinforcement do you think you're providing when you never eat the school's food? That's right: plenty. "See? Those damn waygook-ins never eat our food & keep to themselves." This is magnified all the more if you have such an attitude at a public school.

End of sermon.

I don't eat school lunch. I don't like Korean food. I'm a semi-vegetarian (I eat chicken). But the most important reason I don't is b/c its the only peace and quiet I get ALL day! I have no interest in spending my lunchtime with 1250 kids staring at me and yelling Ms.Kat sangsangnim. No thanks.
I don't think they should be charging you. Have you brought it up with them in a nice way. Just a "Hi, I'm going to start bringing my lunch now, so tehre's no need for you to bother yourself deducting the fee from my salary." If they are really sticklers, don't make a fuss, but a nice polite smile and request goes a long way here.

Ask for a pay slip.
If it shows any deductions for lunch then ask for a reimbursement.

Sound advice given to you earlier in the thread.

If there are no deductions on your pay...you got nothing to say and asking for a reimbusement would be cheap and would probably go over about as well as a slap in your bosses face.

So if they are deducting it from your pay..they owe you nothing....
