I just found a SMOE's new job ad. It appears much much better than before. Check it out:
http://www.worknplay.co.kr/recruitings/public_seoul_sept.htm
I have a very strong feelin' that all public schools will up their ante to keep the good teachers rather than losing them during next hiring season.

It looks like they're getting smart and tired of losing quality people?
They appear to be compensating people for experience now. I have a feeling they'll look for every possibly little way not to pay you the amount you qualify for. |

I just found a glitch though.

Vacation and Paid Leaves
(1) Paid leaves: A total of 21 working days will be provided as official vacation days with agreement from SMOE. Employees working in a school system shall take the leave up to seven workdays during the summer and winter recess respectively. |
It says 21 work days, but the last sentence contradicts the 21 days WTF! |

Without actually seeing the contract, any enthusiasm would be premature.
I would imagine the most undesirable aspects of public school teaching have still not been addressed. Most prospective teachers want to know exactly where they will be teaching, whom they will be teaching, and where they will be staying.
Without specific answers to those questions, I don't expect the changes will do much to attract suitably qualified and experienced teachers. |

Am I reading this right? To get anything beyond 2.0million, you need a Masters degree in TESL/TEFL or a Bachelor's degree in education with a specialisation in English plus previous experience with SMOE?
Good luck filling those positions... |

| Its true that it does reward those with experience and the qualifications, however, I don't think they'll be able to lure good teachers away from their current jobs. |

They will reward people who are already planning to be in Korea a long time anyways. Unless you are settled in Seoul for the long run, if you invested $20G in a Master's degree, have several years of accredited teaching experience, would you really be happy with what they are offering?
How about teachers who are currently on 2.3m with a 100 hour tesol certificate. Are they going to get bumped down to 2.0m next contract?
Who knows..maybe I'm too skeptical. Maybe this will encourage a lot of people to get their Masters degree...For many teachers, it could mean a jump from 2.0m to 2.7m. |

Screw SMOE, the thing is, most public school systems are the same. Offering people with proven track records who know what they are doing 2.0 is crap, i wouldn't wipe my ass with their contracts. I currently work for GEPIK and they are just as bad, after a year of what i and my supervisors consider good work on my part, they wanted me to recontract, the sweetener being 3 weeks vacation and the possibility of a couple of hours overtime @20 000 won an hour. They got all pissed at me when i told them that wasn't acceptable, in some ways i hope they get a chump as the next NEST but for the kids sake i hope they don't. |

Recently, I'm beginning to see more and more pay levels with higher salary being added in public schools like SMOE and others, i.e. Level 1, 1+, 1++.
With added pay levels to reward the experienced teachers with higher pay in general will have great positive impact on overall salary level of FTs in Korea. |

| Sure, you could spend between 10-20 grand on a masters and teach for them for 4+ years to be on 2.5+ or you could just work at a kindy hagwon in gangnam for 2.6, being done by 4pm, meaning you have enough time for a couple of hours in the afternoon to make an extra million a month. |

1. SMOE is offering 21 working days of vacation. The glitch about 7 in the summer and 7 in winter is because they are using old text from last years contract.
2. Nothing is new in the SMOE contract except the vacation time has increased by 7 days.
3. Public school jobs, especially in Seoul, beat the hell out of 90% of hogwan jobs.
4. They will easily fill these positions with qualified teachers. |

| Sure the will fill the positions, 2.2 with a masters and or teaching certification, that is weak as piss. It depends on how much you research in regards to hagwons, they are risky, but if you get a good one then the experience can be a lot better than public schools. |
