My hometown (deadmonton) has a street performers festival (and a fringe fest) that is gaining noteriety.
But frankly, I can't stand any of it.
I don't know what it is about my visage, my posture or my apparent mood but for some reason street performers always, and I mean ALWAYS pick on me.
Here are some instances that really a stand out:
1) The very first time (in 8th grade) I was called up, it was myself and a group of about 8 other people of various ages. The street performer asked us to behaviour like butterflies and not be self conscious about it.
So, being the butterfly that I was, I jumped and spun around, kicking my limbs all akimbo. The crowd seemed very impressed as there were alternate laughs and gasps.
After we were done I was told by my sister (who was watching) that, whilst fluttering about, I had kicked some 6 year old right in the face and he went away with a bloody nose and other "face issues".
2) I had these two guys juggle/throw knives while I stood inbetween the thrown knives. They would whiz past my back and inches (cm at times) close to my nose and face. I no likey.
3) I had one short, quite stocky dude, dressed up like a grandmother, putting his crotch all over me as he tried to stand on my shoulders. Then, when he got on my shoulders, he juggled flaming knives.
That one, I hated the most.
But it doesn't even have to be street performers. When Nanta was in Busan, they had crowd of over a 1000 and they STILL picked me outta the audience....and there were TONNNES of other whiteys to choose from..
In conclusion, I hate street performers but I am curious if anyone else ever gets pulled up into those brief periods of torture. |

One of my best friends (also back in Edmonton) used to perform at the Fringe every year. He was the World's Fattest Contortionist and you could see him on the street folding his legs behind his head. In his first year, he was banned from the Fringe for incorporating leg-shaving into his act for no reason other than shock value.
Anyway, he went on to join the Jim Rose Circus and has toured to Europe, Iceland, LA, and I think Australia now too.
I took this one.
Here he is in England. Jim Rose made him shave his head and they nicknamed him "Big Mac, the typical American" despite the fact he's not American.
A promo shot with another Edmonton Jim Rose Circus inductee, who I think is called Danger Boy.

This performer in Myeong Dong wanted people to torture him. At home point he had this totally hot Japanese woman yanking on his nipples.

I really miss buskers and street performers. Seoul doesn't really have that scene. Apart from the exception above.
Where's that Melonman!! Anyone got a link for his video? I think newbies would like to see how mental Korea can make ex-pats. |
