You raise a valid point in many ways, the problem is that the major faiths in our world are predicated upon demonstrably false and inaccurate works.
That was my point. Mind me too has broken down the varying positions of atheists/agnostics in this thread and other recent threads. It's not so much a matter of letting others have their faiths. It is more a matter of what those faiths mean and what they are based on. More importantly, these 'faiths' are being used to deny people rights, liberties and in some cases their lives.
I'd be more than willing to leave people be if there weren't state votes to ban gay marriage, ban abortion, and remove evolution from education etc. And I'd be perfectly happy if I didn't have to see women be treated as second class (or lower) having to keep their heads or faces covered. I'd be happy if lunatics didn't fly planes into buildings. I'd be happy if one religious group didn't force another into a walled ghetto.
I could literally go on and on and on and on. It's not so much a matter of letting people have their faith, as you can see from the examples above. If these faiths were based on accurate history and science and varifiable it would be one thing, but in these cases they're based on things that we know to be false.
If you ask me where the universe came from, I say I don't know. But what I do know is that it wasn't created in six days. And that's what it comes down to. |
