This has become a hobby horse of sorts so I'll put forward 1 last question unless it's responded to.

What do people here use to listen to music, via,I'd hazard to say, computer?

Friends in Tokyo used a Harmon-Kardon tower which are nice and punchy.Saw them at Costco for 250K.Wonder what they go for in the US?Much less? The construction is fairly basic.

I bought some German Ultrasone open headphones for 85K on the way home from a wedding near Linko last weekend, which, just going through my computer with the noisy cd drive, are still pretty good.Nice chunky cable was the first thing I noticed on opening the box.

I've come to a conclusion that nothing made in Korea is decently price or High quality.

Some computer components are great, but as soon as you put it in a box and slap SAMSUNG or LG on it, it becomes highly bloated in price.

I'm ashamed to say I use my computer for audio. With very good headphones. Sony MDR-XD400. 50mm drivers. Fantastic.

But, of course, it's not the same as a good system in a decently large room with good speakers on stands placed at ear-height.

I used to have a mid-range system of Marantz amp, Pioneer CD, NAD turntable and B&W 602's on good stands. The total cost would have been about 1500 USD. Not high-end but very satisfactory. I was especially pleased with the B&W speakers. They rocked. The soundstage was just right. Turning up loud, which was possible in my home country, you could feel the music and imagine it as an organic force which owned the room. Amazing dynamics.

If your Korean ability is good enough you should check out the magazine What Hifi?

Or just buy the English version at Bandi and Luni in COEX. 15,000 though. Ouch!

1.5 is plenty to spend on a good set-up.Most component systems 5-10,even 15 years ago were going for that and they're s-hite.

Looked at a 3 grand Samsung AV system yesterday and the Samsung speakers were the worst looking plastic tubes.Probably cost all of 5 bucks to make.

I have a NAD CD player & amp and Acoustic Energy speakers. Sound is fantastic. I bought it all here, around 1.1 million won.

I also have a nice pair of Event powered (active) monitors for my recording space. They are great too, very flat, and provide pretty solid low-freq. response for little 6 1/2" woofers.

And a pair of Grado headphones.

Consider these:

http://www.avprime.co.kr/html/shop/totalp/en_take5.asp?shop_id=enuri

They are by ENERGY, and I almost bought that instead of Paradigm. These systems will sound better than anything Samsung will come out with (for movies).

Oh, and I found some Paradigm stuff. These Atoms don't sound bad either:

That looks like a combo package, but you can buy separates, too.

I managed to buy my Ruark Proogue speakers from www.feelaudio.co.kr
and my Musical Fidelity amp and cd player from www.enterav.co.kr

There are some good retailers out there.

I bought my Stax headphones directly from Japan though. Cheaper.

I bought most of my equipment from there too...but don't order online -- the prices are actually much less than those listed.
