I know this question has been done to death, but what extra benifits can you ask for and expect to get when renewing a contract?
I would like to renew for next year at my hogwan. It is not the greatest but it is decent. I am treated well, like the city where I am, paid on time, have the correct taxes taken out all that good stuff.
I have completed one other contract, at a differant school, and this next year will be my last in Korea so I would rather spend it at a place I know.
I want to ask for a raise, and 12-14 days of my vacation between contracts to make a trip home for a wedding, and other things. Here is the kicker, I want my boss to pay for my ticket (RT).
The boss is already on the hook for my one way so it would not be that much more to get the RT, at least in my thinking. Also, my contract ends the day we get back from our summer vacation so nine of the days that I would be requesting off would be when the school is closed.
I also would like an extra day vacation over christmas, just one, and would consider taking it unpaid if I was allowed to have it.
Anyone have any ideas if this is fair or reasonable on my part?

I think anything goes when it comes to renewing, and if you are able to make them want you, I think it would be within reason for them to make some sacrafices to keep you with them. If you want them to pay for your RT from the wedding, just keep in mind they might not want to pay you the 3.2 mil a month you're asking for. I think there is some give and take: offer to increase your responsibilities and they will be more willing to pay you and offer you more. For instance, come in 1-2 hours earlier each day and help with coursebook selection or other odd jobs. From my experience, schools just like having a warm foreign body around in the school even if they aren't teaching.

If you're signing for another year, you should get the r/t for that year, i.e. the return flight over the summer and the flight home after your year is up. I think the time off is reasonable as well. Retaining a teacher is a lot easier and cheaper than recruiting a new one. A 100,000/month raise is pretty standard. You might also want to get your first year's severance now, just in case anything goes wrong over the next year.

I think you're requests are very typical and reasonable.

Your requests are reasonable.

I have found that if your employer does NOT agree to your reasonable requests when it is time to re-up that there is another way.

Boss, my contract is finished and I will NOT be renewing because we could not come to terms. Please have my final pay, severance and airticket handy for my contract completion. Thank you.

Now boss, it is my intention to return to Korea 2 weeks AFTER my current contract expires. Do you know anyone who needs a new teacher starting at that time?

I will need airfare to Korea and since I have experience in Korea I will be asking for a salary that is about 100k more than I am getting now. I would also ask for 2 days off at Christmas.

If you know of anyone, please let me know.

Then let him sit on it for a while.

He who flinches first loses.

He may try to replace you instead agree to the requested terms but...

the supply of teachers is limited.

Unless there is something particularly spectacular about the school and their offering, there is a great chance that, come closer to the day they will try to get you to re-sign with them on your return to Korea because it is almost impossible for them to compete with the public schools for hiring.

Just my 20 won worth of free advice.
