From the Korea Times ...

Girl Gets Physics Breakthrough

Quote:
A Korean student has achieved a breakthrough in a long-standing physics problem posed in Japan, although the problem has not been solved yet.
University of Tokyo (UT) President Komiyama Hiroshi recently recognized Chae Eun-mi, 23, for her work and described her graduation thesis as a critical achievement in world science.

Her paper ``Exciton Lyman Spectroscopy of Strain-Trapped Cu2O Para-Excitons' explains how to realize ``Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) with excitons, electron-hole pairs of semiconductors.

The theory was formulated 40 years ago but has never been realized as excitons are very unstable particles. However, Chae has devised a way to control the exciton by creating a strain-trap.

``I found that the strain-trap enables excitons to condense. If I can make the BEC phenomenon at an extremely low temperature, I believe my research team could perhaps be considered for a Nobel Prize in physics, Chae said ambitiously during an interview with The Korea Times.

Ahn Jae-wook, a physicist at KAIST, said her paper was a great accomplishment for an undergraduate student. ``I believe challengers are achievers and we have to celebrate it, Ahn said.

In addition to her thesis, Chae placed first among graduates and received a grand prize from the UT president. She was also the first foreign student to top the admission requirements to the graduate school of physics.

Chae joined a Korea-Japan joint scholarship program and chose to study at UT after graduating from Myungduk Foreign Language High School in 2002. Chae ranked first in 2001 on the College Scholastic Ability Test among science students.

Her teacher at the high school said that Chaes success in physics could help change the idea about foreign language schools in Korea .

``Many still think that students at foreign language schools should major in foreign languages. But foreign language skills are just tools to do whatever the students want, he said. ``However, the government still controls students who major in other studies, except foreign languages, at foreign language schools and I hope our alumnus Chae can change this prejudice.

Chae also pointed out that she believes college students should be devoted to basic scholarship, rather than finding a job. ``Here, it is generally accepted that studying hard will naturally secure a job, and I think so, too, she said.

She also pointed out that Korean colleges need to improve and create a more study-oriented environment. ``I might not have done as well if I had studied in Korea because many undergraduate students dont study very hard, she said.

ahaha, laughing at that last line. Leave it to a K-paper to not go in-depth at all; I'm really curious about her work, but I guess I'll have to wait till it's published in New Scientist or something for a better explanation.
