From the Korea Times ...

Seoul Mayor to Swim Across Han River

Quote:
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon plans to participate in a swimming event next month that will be held as part of the city's annual spring festival.
Oh is actively considering swimming across the 1-km-wide Han River that bisects the city along with swimmers and ordinary citizens on the last day of the Hi Seoul Festival 2007, which runs from April 27 to May 6, city officials said.

Park Tae-hwan, who won a gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle competition at this year's World Swimming Championships, might join the mayor in the event, they added.

The Hi Seoul Festival has been held since 2003 to give local citizens and foreign tourists a glimpse into how the 600-year-old city has evolved.

Oh, a 46-year-old sports enthusiast, completed a triathlon involving swimming, bicycling and a marathon in 2004.

I hope he keeps his mouth closed, or we'll need a new mayor.

That Slovenian dude swam the entire Yangtze river into Shanghai. There are way dirtier rivers than the Han.

Has anyone done the waterskiing or wakeboarding on the Han River? Just curious about quality of the riding and the price.

He let the current do all the work. The amazing thing isnt the distance its that he wasnt eaten alive by pirranhas or other nasty creatures in that river.

Wow. Must've been a tad lonely, being the only living organism in the whole river...

Teukseom Resort, or basically a riverside concrete park on Oksu side of the Han, has a ski/wakeboard facility where you can learn. 30,000 per 10min. ride. Free gear. I forget the subway stop name.

I usually go down to Andong lake where they have a similar set-up in much cleaner water. Once I buy my car, I'll be investing in a windsurfing board and wetsuit which also can be done on the Han near the same area.

Anybody planning on swimming the river at that May Festival? My manager invited the foreign teachers and I to go for it with him. I'm seriously considering....
