Itaewon is an awesome place. It has a certain magic to it. I would spend every night of the week there if it wasn't for work. I've been to Hongdae and Apgujeong. Those places are alright. But the real fun is in Itaewon. I'm always at Helios, Geckos, Polly's Kettle, Old Town, and then back to Geckos until Helios re-opens. The Seoul Pub usually makes its way in there somehow. Basically, there is always a club open at anytime which means drink and be merry as long as you please.
In this thread I ask people to share their Itaewon experience, and what they think will happen when the military moves out.

iteawon is great becasue of its elevated and central position. The real tragedy is the size of the US army base. When are they going to RETREAT?

Don't read much, huh? They are moving from Yongsan (next to Itaewon) to bases in the south of the country. And it so happens that Itaewon wouldn't exist in its present form if it wasn't for the US Army. Now it will be left to the ESL great unwashed. Happy now?

If you wanted to leave your own country why would you then go and hang around in the place with the most foreigners? Itaewon is horrible. It's just like being at club in my own country complete with all the macho, white meat head guys who get drunk and if they don't get laid want to go and start a fight.

On my third day here we asked a foreigner for a cash machine. He kept saying how him and his mate were "looking for a couple of cu*ts to bash." After my mate told him fighting was stupid the other one was throwing down his jacket shouting, "you wanna go, you wanna go" and trying to chase us up the road.

There is little edge to the clubs in Korea although an elevated safety factor. The best djs, the best atmospheres are not to be had here because it's in its infant stages.

Don't let people chase you anywhere. Your mistake. If you stood up for yourselves and acted like men, you would have had no problem.

...I like E.T.-won (where all the aliens go, get it?) just fine. I go there about once/month. I picked up an awesome pair of fake Oakley's there for W10,000. I don't think What-the-Book is going out of business if the Army leaves. Nor Gecko's. As I am a boring married person + don't get (usually) get drunk in public (without my wife) I wouldn't give much of a damn if the rest of the bars blew away. It is great for amateur sociology, mind you (a bit like Dave's that way, now that I think of it). Definitely a vibe unique there to anywhere else I've been.

WTF do Itaewon and Nana Plaza have in common? Mrs. Quirrel, you should talk to Mr. Quirrel about Nana. He could prolly set you straight! Laughing

If the Korean government has any sence when the US army decide to finally move base they will transform Iteawon into the upper class suburb it was meant to be, rather than the white trash playground it is today.

KOREAN WAR:
US: ok Korea we are use some of our bombs and soldiers to end this war
KOREA: why didnt you say that BEFORE our entire country was envaded?
US: because it wasnt necessary then. If we dont do it now we COULD ALL DIE!!
KOREA: ok
US: by the way you have to agree to let us setup a huge base right in the middle of the city so out soldiers can rape your women and shit on your turf for the next 50 years Very Happy

Thank you for enlightening us, Seoulman...

Anyway, more on topic. Itaewon is amazing for restaurants, but otherwise it's just trashy. I'd have to say Itaewon is the only place in Korea that I don't feel particularly safe in, at night.

Well, you have a bunch of bored soldiers that don't want to be in Korea. Some of them are going to take it out on you if you actually look like you're enjoying yourself.

After the base moves, I can see the place becoming a high-class area like Apujeong, but much more interesting because it will be multicultural. A place of high dining with great food cooked by international chefs. Condos occupied by diplomats and international businesspeople. Hooker Hill will lose its name after the wrecking ball levels all of those crazy ho bars.

As I've said before, they should just pave the whole street over and make it a pedestrian mall.

I like Shitaewon for when I need a bit of International culture. Some of the restaurants are very good! Many of the pubs, too! You've got to love the live music. Smile
Of course, don't forget about the soju pizzas on the ground and the dumbing down fighting in the streets. Rolling Eyes
