I have an adequate collection of mp3s. A large number were purchased from iTunes. The others are from various sources. I don't want to be limited to only playing either or.

This will be my first mp3 player purchase. I'd like to be able to listen to music, audio books, run a daily organiser and store a few photos. Not adverse to changing tunes periodically. I don't have to carry everything with me at all times.

There is a bit of a techno-geek in me and I enjoy do playing with software. If I purchase a non-Apple product will I be able to play the iMusic with the help of a little software? Prefer something that I won't outgrow 6 months from now. A shuffle just won't cut it!

Budget - ah yes - the ever important budget. I'm trying to stay under 150,000 with shipping. Have a Korean friend who can help with the purchase if needed, also have mom at home if something needs shipping from the States.

Thanks for your help. You were especially kind to a pervious poster who was also asking for recommendations. My situation is slightly different so I wondered if the ideas would be different.

I'm not positive, but I think the deal with itunes is that you have to use an iPod to listen to the music. And the deal with an iPod is that you can't use other subscription based services. However, from what I understand, iPods do play good old mp3s fine, so if you have a lot of music that isn't part of some other subscription service you may want to go with some flavor of iPod.

I've had an IPOD and can tell you it's a piece of crap.

iriver and cowon are more flexible and easier to use than an IPOD.

itunes is really hard to use and is useless except for getting podcasts.

Go with an iriver for the reasons mentioned above. Also you can get irivers for a good price on korean auction sites. Your friend can help you out.

Go 50,000 won over your budget and get yerself an iPod nano, 8 gigs to be exact. If you see one and tinker with one at any technomart, you will fall in love. They have pink, black, green, and classic white. They are beautiful, tiny, and can store over 2,000 songs. GET ONE!! Also get an inexpensive, clear protective case for it. I've had mine since Christmas, and boy does it make the subway rides a hell of a lot shorter!

You could probably get an iRiver e10 for around w150,000 at Technomart; maybe less. It doesn't have all the feature you listed, but I love mine. It's 6GB. If it was 10GB it would be perfect. How much music, etc., do you want to hold on it at any one time? That would be an important consideration (even more important than cost, if you ask me). How much music, etc., are you going to want to carry around in six months time? Organize your life with your phone's PIM--that would be another suggestion (no PIM on your phone? hmm, maybe time for a new phone, too). Most phones play mp3s nowadays (although sometimes the storage isn't great). Mine has a PIM, web-browser, camera, blog editor, email, SMS, PDF viewer, games, photo album, simple photo editor, an mp3 player, a Korean-English dictionary, and a karaoke machine. I'm sure there is even better out there by now. It's ridiculous what you can get on a phone now. Maybe a better multi-funtion phone would be closer to what you want. Anyway, I love my e10.

peace,
