Read Herf's Reactionary Modernism and study the writings of the German High Command. They show the underling virulence in modern mans reaction to modern ideas. O examine the backs of the girls in Hogarth's etches... |

Heh, I was thinking about map projections with regard to Critical Theory. I'm quite sympathetic to the goals and some of the assumptions of critical theory, but in its regular postmodernist form it's philosophically incoherent and really quite toothless. Thus, I had been thinking that trying to use postmodernist critique for the emancipation and empowerment of disadvantaged groups is sort of like using the Gall-Peters projection to increase the amount of arable land in the Third World.
Oh, and it turns out that Critical Cartography actually exists, at least according to the google. |
Yeah, and I was exposed to it.
The disappointing thing is...if you sit down and jot some notes on a napkin over a cup of coffee, it's easy to think of a half a dozen ways postmodernist analysis could offer a new 'wrinkle' on certain issues and social problems. Take alcoholism, for example. Obviously, alcohol use is a "socially constructed" behavior, and its use varies from culture to culture. Alcoholism is accepted as a disease in western cultures...but is there really a genetic or biological basis for alcoholism? Probably there is...but the disease may at least partially be a social construct. Homelessness and poverty are other issues that postmodernism might shed some light on...if only there was a little ambition to do some field research. As I said, disappointing. |
