I am curious as to when people of my generation (i am in my early 30"s) plan to retire.
I mean retire from their full-time working life, not just as a teacher here in korea, but for good.

My parents' generation seem to retire earlier than my grandparents, so I guess with more investment options one doesnt need to work till 65 anymore.

Anyway when will you retire or when do you plan to?

Me, I wanna retire at 45

My plan is to work till then and become an investor (in property and stockmarket)

I am already a part-time investor....so i have 15 years more to become an expert....god knows i have the time

me or in general?

I dont know about in general but for me a 100 000 us dollars in investment capital would be enough to live on as a full time investor now

That wont be enough 15 years from now but I will have 5 times that if all goes to plan....that would be enough to live very comfortably as a full time investor with a family (going on my past performance)

100,000? In Ireland 300,000 buys you a house...

I don't know how I could ever retire if I continue being an English teacher. Crying or Very sad

oh no i meant 100 000 would be enough for a single guy who owns his own place and car free and clear
if i had that (car, house and 100 grand)and no debt, then i would stop working now and start investing full time

I'd suggest picking a country that was more investor friendly or putting your money elsewhere.

We're 'retiring' after another year here. Paying off the debts, buying a piece of land (15 acres or so), building a house from scratch, and never working for anyone else again. I'll be retired before I'm 30. Very Happy

i don't think i'll ever retire. i'd get way too bored and depressed if i did. i think i will constantly bounce around (occupation-wise) for the rest of my life - never sticking with any one job (or living in any one place) for more than five or so years. continuing education is definitely not out of the question. i like to keep things interesting and fresh. it keeps me from getting disillusioned and allows me to keep dreaming. but i definitely plan on having an absolutely stress-free job by the time i'm at the normal retirement age. ambassador to fiji sounds good.

A million bucks is considered sufficient to retire upon in the USA. With a conservative investment return of 5% that gives you $50,000 a year to live on, not much considering the rise in medical costs.

Another 14 years or so.

I guess if I got married to the girlfriend we probably retire in 9 or 10 years but marriage isn't worth it.

We plan to get most of what we need for ourselves from the land. We'll have a bit squirreled away for emergencies/old age. Beyond that, we're both artisans and could supplement what we need that way. When you consider living off-grid, away from cities and with enough land to grow/make almost anything you need, you start to forget what you would ever need money for Wink (living of course in a country with socialized medicine and in a province where land is dirt cheap). Looking at it that way, once you're debt free with enough to build a house, retirement is already there. This of course is assuming that you are happy knowing you'll be spending the rest of your life growing your own food, making everything from scratch, building your own furniture, and being miles away from anyone else. Very Happy
