And that's why it's the safest.

Any kind of software to download free music is going to put you at risk for a virus. I personally use Limewire on occasion, but I have a mac.

I use Citrix Wire, which is based on the Limewire code but I feel it's much safer. I'd also reccommend having a good firewall and antispy software running aside from the obvious antivirus. My favorite antivirus is Avira. It's free and powerful. You can find all this stuff at www.download.com. Also, don't download any file that has an unusual filesize. Most MP3s range from 3MB (3,000 kb) to 10MB (10,000 kb) depending on the bitrate. If you see a song with the right name you're looking for but the filesize is, say, 138kb, don't download it.

I wasn't aware the downloading software made any difference, since any potential virus would be in the original uploaded file.

I use torrents, which I find much quicker than P2P. BitComet for general stuff and Azureus for specific private sites like Oink. Some of the better sites hate BitComet for some techy, geek reason I don't get.

But, yeah. I have a lot of anti virus programs running to catch the inevitable, as well.

Edit: if you already use bit torrent, skip this post.

I have had really good luck with torrents.

"But, Thunndarr, what's a torrent?" you say.

Well, to keep it simple, it's a relatively easy, relatively safe (w/r/t virii) way of getting music, videos, programs, and games from the internet. Disclaimer: it is also as illegal as anything else.

"Ok, that's sounds good, how do I get started?" you say.

First, you need a torrent client.

"WTF is a torrent client?"

Shaddup, I'm getting to that. A torrent client is a program you need to install first that will take care of managing all your torrent connections and downloads. I recommend a program called utorrent. Google it. Install it.

Next, you'll need to find some torrent trackers.

"WTF is a torrent tracker?"

Quit interrupting, dammit! Anyway, a torrent tracker contains information about what you're downloading. There are websites that contain indexes of trackers so you can search through all the music they have listed. When you find what you want, just click download, and utorrent will pop up and start the download process. After a certain amount of time your download will finish, and you will have successfully pirated music. Congratulations, criminal.

Some torrent sites.

swith to utorrent. It's much smaller and has all the same features.
