Here are the new stats:

English 31.9% (+126.6%)
Chinese 12.8% (+284.8%)
Japanese 8% (+65.8%)
Spanish 6.5% (+159.7%)
German 5.7% (+99.9%)
French 4.1% (+228.9%)
Korean 3.3% (+71.1%)
Italian 3% (+118.7%)
Portuguese 3% (+280%)
Dutch 1.5% (+171.2%)

Other 20.2% (+169.5%)

The numbers in brackets show the growth in internet users from 2000 - 2005. Since the world average is 169.5%, anything below that means that it's falling behind.

Weird though, the number of internet users in the world still hasn't even reached a billion. That's a bit of a waste.

New stats for the end of March:

English 30.6% (down 1.3)
Chinese 13% (up 0.2)
Japanese 8.5% (up 0.5)
Spanish 7.9% (up 1.2)
German 5.6% (down 0.1)
French 4.0% (down 0.1)
Korean 3.3% (same same)
Portuguese 3.2% (up 0.2)
Italian 2.8% (down 0.2)
Dutch...gone!
replaced by Russian at 2.3% and an incredible 650%+ yearly growth.

New stats for the end of June:

English 30.0% (down 0.6)
Chinese 13.8% (up 0.Cool
Japanese 8.3% (down 0.2)
Spanish 7.5% (down 0.4)
German 5.6% (no change)
French 4.4% (up 0.4)
Korean 3.2% (down 0.1)
Portuguese 3.1% (down 0.1)
Italian 2.8% (same)
Russian 2.3% (same)

Total number of users is somewhere around 1,043,104,886.

New stats for the end of September:

English 29.7% (down 0.3)
Chinese 13.3% (down 0.5)
Japanese 7.9% (down 0.4)

Italian 2.7% (down 0.1)
Russian 2.2% (down 0.1)

Other languages: 20.5%
Total numbers of users: 1,086,250,903

New stats for January:
English 29.9% (up 0.2)
Chinese 14.0% (up 0.7)
Spanish 8.0% (up 0.5)
Japanese 7.9% (no change)
German 5.4% (no change)
French 5.0% (up 0.4%)
Portuguese 3.1% (no change)
Korean 3.1% (no change)
Italian 2.8% (no change)
Arabic 2.6% (new to the list)

Other languages: 18.2%
Total number of users: 1,093,529,692

Russian's disappeared from the list for the time being, thanks to Arabic having a 930% growth rate over the last 7 years. The rest are about the same, except for French which is doing better than I expected.

New stats for March:

English 29.5% (down 0.4)
Chinese 14.3% (up 0.3)
Spanish 8.0% (no change)
Japanese 7.7% (down 0.2)
German 5.3% (down 0.1)

Portuguese 3.6% (up 0.5)
Korean 3.1% (no change)

While I don't expect this (as it would be pretty darn impossible), how many of those sites are useful and not crappy cyworld pages (or the Chinese equivalent)? Smile

THis would be much more informative if we could see the breakdown of those stats into specific kinds of pages (though I don't even know what the different topics would be)...

Has anyone noticed how many truly gifted Indian writers are writing in English? It seems to me that there are more good Indian writers than American, much less British or the rest. And don't forget Bollywood. India may save our jobs!!

Really? Hey I don't care if it's true or not (subjective anyway.) But seems like a spurious statement to me....

The internet may foster one of two very very different trends:

-universal Pan-Global Culture that uses English as its meduim of interface;

-fractured islands of cultures who relate only to themselves.

Some time ago, when there was optimism about a Global Community, the former looked promising; the stats showing more and more internet users interfacing in their own languages may indicate that isolated cultures and sub-cultures will turn in on themselves, making the internet not a harbinger of Universal Culture, but a force that further divides the world, making it easier and easier for us to choose not to interact with one another.

hmm I wonder why english has leveled off?? maybe because so many english speaking homes already have computers. The other languages will soon hit a plateau when it comes to infrastructure and planning. I give it your afore mentioned 5 years before a massive slow down in chinese and 3rd world growth.

So, English down, Chinese up, Spanish up, everything else the same. I wish I could see what languages are down there below #10.

They'll all have PDA/cell phones connected to the internet soon, or
maybe something better.

I remember talking about people having dialup internet connection. The correct answer would have been it will go away because something better will come along.
