We're leaving at the end of May and I'm not sure that it will be possible to take my beautiful computer with me. I bought it a mere six months ago, so it still has an AppleCare warranty for another six months or so (depending on when I sell it). I'm just wondering if anybody would be interested in buying it. Brand new, the computer is selling here in Korea for 1,320,000. I figure I'd be looking for about 1,120,000 or so. I've still got the box, manuals, DVDs, and so on. Again, I'm not sure if I'll be selling it right away, but I would like to know if anybody is interested in it.
Alternatively, anybody know any secure way to get this puppy home? Ideally I'd like to take it with me on board the plane, but I'm not sure how safe that would be - airlines don't take responsibility for stolen electronics goods that are checked and all. Any advice? |

Don't worry about taking it on the plane -- just keep it near you at all times. You won't get 1.1 selling it used; you'd probably be better-off bringing it home with you. |

How am I supposed to get it in the cabin? With the box, it's bigger than what's allowed for cabin luggage. I looked up a few iMac carrying cases, but the shipping to Korea was just as much as the bag - $200 total!! Yikes. Then again, shipping back to Canada + tax would be more than $200, I'm sure. Arrgh. |

I think what I'll do is get an iLugger case (I found it for $160 shipped) and use that as my carry-on. It turns out that it will be much cheaper to go that route than to ship it insured to Canada, esp. considering taxes once I get there.
If it makes you feel any better, I'm only using Windows XP on it! |

Why bother with an expensive case like that when you can stick in any old one? |

Why not just re-pack it in it's box and check it in? If you don't have too much other luggage they might not even charge you for it. |

I'm in Korea, and I can't find any old one that'll fit. I suspect this is related to this comment...

The reason is because baggage handlers aren't called "throwers" for a reason. I'm not going to trust an expensive piece of hardware to an airline that refuses to take responsibility if one of their employees steals it.
Thanks for the comments, though! I appreciate the help. |

How does that make me feel better?
I only said that it should be able to fit into a typical suitcase, just pad the thing. Now if you had the 24" iMac that would be a different story. |

you can absolutely put it in your luggage! and its only a 17"!
i brought a 20" imac to korea with me, and took it back home. packed it in my luggage, no problems.
however, i went crazy with the packaging. i bubble wrapped it, then put sweaters and other clothes around, and then bubble wrapped it again. no problems.... |

I plan on sending mine, tightly, and thoroughly packed via ground mail.
Does this seem like a reasonable idea?
We have SO much sheet to send home and I'm not really keen to take it as carry on (though if worst comes to worst: What can I do?) |

I thought about this too, but the idea of an expensive piece of electronics floating across the Pacific ocean, untracked, for 2 to 3 months would cause me far too much stress. Surface is cheap, sure, but if you absolutely need to ship it, make sure it's EMS or at least air, if only for your piece of mind. |
