Did your friend lose his JET job because his 3 yrs. were up or was he dismissed/non-renewed? The latter is VERY rare(too rare, IMHO, but I'm not accusing your friend whom I obviously don't know!).

I lovbe Japanese food. I could have sushi for lunch and dinner everyday. I would need McDonalds breakfast to get my fat intake however. How I miss McDonalds breakfast.

I think I've always been leary of Japan because the women are shorter, crooked teeth, lack the sexy Korean cheekbones, and perm there hair in funny ways.. and those sneaker shoes just aren't as sexy as high heels..

Did I just say all of that? Just making funny stereotypes Wink

On the plus side.. there are some sexy fashionable Japanese among them.. and the music is pretty good.. and more western music is heard/available..

Korean food is alot better though.

Just an aside not.. one of the biggest reasons I've avoided Japan is because I hate spending $$$$$$$$ just to enjoy an evening out. However I went to HongDae for awhile on Monday night to avoid the many entrance charges.. and almost everywhere sells beer at a minimum of 5000-6000 won??!!?? Whats up with that? Route 66 always had prices like that and was well-known for being the MOST expensive.. now everything is that price.. I went to HonkyTonk, Ska, all the little old dives from a years ago.. and they are all way up there in the beer prices.. sheesh, no reason to stay in Korea anymore, huh?

Tokyo is a superior choice over anywhere in Korea.

Korea is a more barbaric experience.

Living in Seoul is not really cheaper. The housing a lot of schools give teachers is shocking low standard and lots of teacehrs get screwed on housing and air fare anyways.

Working in Tokyo is where all the money is 3 Million Won a month is easy) and all the fun is.

I wouldn't want to go work in the sticks in Japan, Korea or anywhere else, though. And so, If you're considering JET, be forwarned. Life can be pretty s hitty, especially if you don't speak the language.

No, your employer doesn't have to act as your guarantor. You can get places without guarantors. You have to prove that you have a job though and that's it.

For those of you who are considering a move to Tokyo, Fukuoka, etc - a very wise decision.

I worked in Japan for a couple of years and then moved to Seoul. I eventually decided Japan was the better place to live and teach and so headed back to Tokyo. No way is Seoul a better city for me over Tokyo or Taipei - in fact it's a distant, very distant third.

The most money I ever made in my life was in Tokyo. It's a fun city also and is no more expensive to drink in than going to the popular bars in Seoul.

- My visa is good for 3 years!
- I can enter/exit the country as many times as I like.
- I can quit my job as often as I like and get a new one if I want.
- the beer is better.
- Japanese women dress much better than Korean girls (high heels, not clown shoes! ha, aha!!)

Korea is second rate compared to Japan.

You're right, it is rarely the case that an EFL'er will want to go to Korea after living and teaching in Japan.

All way round, Japan and the Japanese people are much easier to live in and work with compared with Korea and the Korean people.

And Taipei is an even better place to work than Tokyo.

Not to get off topic , TECO, but from where did you get your low opinion of JET? I was a JET in a smallish city, didn't speak a word of Japanese when I arrived & found the whole experience to be perhaps... the best 3 years of my life.

how about going back to the country that you came from and getting real jobs, so you don't have to worry about places where they don't speak your language?
