Three Dylan covers by women that I think are better than the orginal:

Nanci Griffith - Spanish Boots of Spanish Leather

Shawn Colvin - You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go

Sertab Erener - Another Cup of Coffee

(Note the Griffith and Colvin tracks come from cover albums they did; Griffith's cover of John Prine's The Speed of the Sound Loneliness (with Prine singing backup) is better than the original as well.)

Another by a man: Leon Russell doing The Ballad of Hollis Brown

Couple of good Springsteen covers:

John Wesley Harding - Jackson Cage

The Mavericks - All That Heaven Will Allow

JWH also does a great cover of Madonna's Like a Prayer, while the Maverick's Raul Malo did a cover of Something Stupid with Trisha Yearwood that beat the Sinatras' original as well as the Nicole Kidman/Robbie whatshisface version.

The Neville Brothers' cover of Louis Jordan's Run Joe, not least because it updates the crime in the song from telling fortunes to selling cocaine.

Taj Mahal's cover of Hank Williams' Mind Your Own Business (Steve Goodman runs a close second here).

But the all time best is Elvis Costello and the Attractions covering Leon Payne's Psycho - done just dead enough to be really, really scary.

Eddie Vedder's version of the Who's "I'm One" (with the Who backing him) is pretty good.

Elvis' cover of Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline".

Ani Difranco does a mean "When You Were Mine" by Prince.

Prince does the best version of "Just My Imagination (Running Away From Me)" ever.

Hank Williams III's version of "Cocaine Blues".

Slowdive's "Some Velvet Morning".

Seven pages and no one has mentioned probably the best cover artist of recent decades: Linda Ronstadt. She's made a career of choosing interesting songs from artists in a huge variety of genres and succeeded at covering them faithfully but often with more emotion than the original.

Take a listen to her 'Walk Away Renee' with Ann Savoy (a Cajun singer), done originally by The Left Banke.

But my all time favorite cover is Joan Baez's version of Dylan's 'Tears of Rage'. Chilling.

Who does the clearest version of 'All I Really Want To Do'? I'd like to use it in class sometime for a fun lesson in rhymes.

I ain't lookin' to compete with you,
Beat or cheat or mistreat you,
Simplify you, classify you,
Deny, defy or crucify you.
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you.

Though it's hard to beat the original, three versions of Nirvana'a "Smells like teen spirit" give it a run.

Six bloody pages and no one mentions the greatest cover-better-than-original I know of:

Canadian Paul Anka wrote and performed the English version of "My Way" and it sucked royally, really hurts one's ears if you hear his version, but when masterly covered by Frank Sinatra it became a classic.

Gypsy Kings did this one in Spanish, pretty good actually

Not sure how name this one, either Springsteen or Patti Smith "Because the Night" they co-wrote it , Natile Merchant also did it pretty well

Jimmy Buffett does "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Southern Cross" fairly good

Got to agree Madonnas version of "American Pie" is the WORST cover ever done. Whats worse is a collegue of mine actually played it for his students. They must of done something really bad to deserve that one
