i had a box (not a very big one either) shipped from home that had, at most, $200 worth of clothes inside of it. it was mailed to my school where i picked it up and was given a bill for 115,000 won that was listed as a "tax."
is this for real? am i getting raped by my hagwon or by korea itself? either way i'd like to bludgeon someone to death with a baseball bat. |

Hate to be harsh here - but ...
Seriously? If you want to be angry, be angry at your own ignorance.
My advice: Pay the tax and leave your poor hagwon out of this. Not everyone is out to get you.
And, FFS, keep the package under $150USD (including shipping!) next time. |

Yeah. And? It's called "Duty". All countries have it. Korea charges duty on the total of (item being shipped + shipping charge) x (duty tax rate).
Be happy you're not shipping in electronics, where the duty rates can be as high as 20% (for desktop computers).
Same with books and DVDs. New ones will be charged Duty, used ones will not. |
