Does anyone else work at a private public school (I know the term sounds absurd but anyone familair with the Korean system will know what I mean) that got a government appointed dietician this year? Our did, and I'm told it's a Korea-wide policy this year. The result has been a dramatic improvement in the food, at least in relative terms. Don't get me wrong, there are still times like last night when I go in and see nothing I want to eat, but the amount of decent food has really increased, and I never look at the tray anymore trying to figure what the main dish is supposed to be.

Anyone else noticed this?

I work at a private elementary school (not sure what you mean by private public) and the quality of the canteen food is top notch. There appears to be a full-time manager (as opposed to the ladies who ladle out the goop) and the menu is well planned.

I work at two public schools - one public and and one private-public (?). Lunch at the public school is generally of a good quality with some variation, but at the public-private school the menu doesn't vary much and the quality is lower overall. I do hope they get a dietician, but I doubt it.

Private elementary schools tend to be a bit different - fee paying and more money to kick around. Private MSs and HSs are usually have both a school district and a private board to answer to. At any rate, it seems that control of the cafeteria shifting from one to the other has been a very positive change.

That's great. Now if only they would make a policy like this at home! Despite all the hoopla about childhood obesity at home, most of the improvements are local initiatives and not always effective. (I'm not saying that local initiatives can't be effective, many of them are, but the epidemic is so bad that nationwide policy is necessary).

Don't all schools (middle and high at least) have fees for at least some things?

Some private public schools have mandatory attendance, and I believe the individual fees students pay aren't significantly more than public-public school students. These private-public schools are mostly affiliated with institutions like churches and universities, and for all intents and purposes, they're only private in the sense of how they are administered. I think private-public schools that have academic or social prestige (ie expensive), like international and foreign language schools are more rare, at least below the high-school level.

After the food poisoning scare last spring a number of schools fired their suppliers and started working with the mothers to run the lunches themselves. From the first-hand reports I heard the results were much better food being served at much lower prices.
