Many of the threads on this site that mention Itaewon usually end up with a few comments regarding that Itaewon is worse than hell itself.
Why is that?? |

Anybody who thinks that itaewon is worse than hell itself has lived a very sheltered life, it's a bit rough around the edges if you can't handle it stay home with a warm cup of cocoa. |

boring
unoriginal
jock orientated
No hate, I just choose to spend my time elsewhere. It's like a Korean who goes to L.A and only hangs out in Korea town...dig? |

Crazy,
Point taken.
What i really dont understand is the people who say they came here for the culture...bollox... they came here for a job and the money.
I am the only foreigner in my company, every lunchtime i eat Korean food with colleagues, i spend 2 or 3 nights a week out entertaining Korean customers at Korean joints.
For me, having the ability to go eat Western food and relax with other expats is a great retreat. |

Bollox? There are a lot of people who came here for things other than a job and money. You just pointed out one of the things that I do despise Itaewon for--that attitude. |

Also, I don't care if people spend all their time there or not. It's not my cup of tea most of the time but it has it's sweet spots for sure.
Anyways, this thread is going to be a bitch and moan fest as usual. |

I don't like it there because it's a violent place. |

Really!!!
give me some examples?
So you came here for the culture??
Or maybe you came to escape from something?
Or maybe you couldnt get a job back home and thought "hang on, i can speak English and go teach foreigners?"
Either way, and i could have started out like this on my orignal response, i love the arrogance of the people who hate Itaewon.
So maybe we will have to agree to disagree! |

I don't hate it, but I don't hang there either. It's good for when I want a choice of international foods, as I love The Greek place there, but as far as my nighttime activities, I prefer Gangnam/Shinsa/Apgu, etc. |

Arrogance? Someone needs to look up "ironic" methinks....
Anyways, I have nothing more to say here. There isn't any point. |

Second.
Also, not sticking out like a sore thumb occasionally is also a relief. |

I dont hate it but theres no reason for me to go there. What does Itaewon offer? Food? Maybe the only thing. If I liked shopping I wouldnt like it since the shopping there is all either cheap crap or jock/hip hop oriented stuff. The people who frequent the place arent my cup of tea either. Its a sleazy, boring place. Good for getting a cheap prostitute maybe. |

uh, if you're from a multi-cultural area with a large and varied immigrant population then itaewon is like home. like, if you're from nebraska or someplace in Canada not close to the border then itaewon is definetly not like home. i mean, most places in the USA don't have that many immigrants, just the major cities and borders. and there are Koreans there too...cool, curious ones. with tattoos. and musical instruments. |

I don't really agree with any of the answers, so I'll explain why I don't go there often. First, I don't feel the need to go to Itaewon to hang out with foreigners. Second, I go there if there's a specific purpose like the book exchange or going to a resturant. Third, I've always heard bad things about it (whether they are true or not is beside the point) so I have always limited how much time I spend there.
I've been here over three years and probably only been to Itaewon about a half dozen times. That's not as much as others, but at the same time I don't totally avoid the place.
By the way, my favorite answer would have been the one about wearing hanbok. |

Large multicultral areas offer a variety of things. From the basics liks shopping and food to something a bit more ambitious. Itaewon offers the basest things and nothing with ambition. |
